FIFA to open 10-days transfer windows to enable Manchester City, Chelsea, BVB and other European giants sell their players

FIFA have announced that they will create a new transfer window this summer to allow players to participate in the Club World Cup, with several top stars set to be free agents mid-tournament

FIFA has announced the introduction of a new transfer window next summer, designed to address issues arising from the Club World Cup schedule. The tournament is set to take place in the United States from June 15 to July 13, featuring 32 teams including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

Due to the timing of the competition, player contracts expiring on June 30 posed a significant problem. Without adjustments to the existing transfer window, stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan could find themselves without a club mid-tournament.

Similarly, Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United to Chelsea is due to end on June 30, and Bayern Munich has seven players with contracts concluding, such as Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies.

In light of these complications, FIFA has decided to implement a special 10-day “exceptional registration window” starting June 1, allowing for the registration of players to participate in the Club World Cup. This proposal received unanimous support at the FIFA council meeting on Thursday and is anticipated to receive approval from national associations shortly.

FIFA has announced that it will permit a second temporary six-day window from June 27 for clubs participating in the Club World Cup to replace or re-register players whose contracts expire mid-tournament. This could potentially allow players to play for two teams in the same season if they join a club participating in the Club World Cup before the tournament begins, reports the Mirror.

However, they are barred from representing two different teams within the competition itself. For instance, under these new rules, Bayern could potentially lose Alphonso Davies to Real Madrid and then face him just days later in the Club World Cup.

At present, clubs are only allowed to make transfers during the summer and January windows. This isn’t the first time FIFA has made such a move, having previously amended transfer rules in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic extended the season into the summer.

FIFA stated that the “objective” of this change was to “encourage clubs and players whose contracts are expiring to find an appropriate solution to facilitate the players’ participation”. Despite these changes, the Club World Cup has so far failed to attract broadcasters, who have declined to bid for the rights, leading Gianni Infantino to hold an emergency meeting to generate interest.

“The FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will kick off a new era for club football across the world, with the top teams competing to be crowned the official FIFA club world champions,” Infantino asserted. “These regulations will ensure that the best possible conditions are in place in order for all 32 participating clubs and the best players in the world to shine at the highest level.”

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has criticized current referees in the league after watching Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Arsenal have been the only team this season to have had two players sent off for kicking the ball away. Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard were both sent off after kicking the ball away in the Gunners games against Brighton and Manchester City.Best video game consoles

Mikel Arteta has been furious with the refereeing this season, and even suggested that he will tell his players to play without the ball to avoid being booked.

The most recent incident against Arsenal was on Saturday, when the referee failed to send off Wilfried Ndidi after he kicked the ball away after a foul, delaying the restart.

Dermot Gallagher defended his colleague for that decision:

“He doesn’t stop or delay the restart. There’s no one there who can possibly take a free-kick. Saka’s on the floor, can’t take it. There’s not an Arsenal player anywhere near it. If you want players yellow carded for that we’re going to have a lot of players sat in the stands this season.”

This submission by Gallagher was ridiculous because the incident was clearly similar to what Trossard got sent off for against Man City.

What Mark Clattenburg said about Premier League referees

Clattenburg was on the panel during the Arsenal game on Tuesday night. He praised the work of Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic who was in charge of the game.

Vincic was the referee in the 2024 UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. He showed why he was selected for that final with an impressive refereeing display, which Mark Clattenburg praised.

“He’s got the respect of the players, he’s experienced. I think a lot of the Premier League referees can watch this tonight to see how they can find balance. He’s got the authority, and if you get the respect of the players, it makes your life easier on the field of play.” He said on Amazon Prime’s coverage of the game.

Former Premier League referee breaks down Calafiori handball decision

In the 77th minute of the game, PSG appealed for a penalty after the ball came off Riccardo Calafiori’s hand in the penalty box. The referee did not give the penalty, and it was cleared by VAR.

Mark Clattenburg analysed and explained why it was not a penalty:

“It’s interesting because it’s come off his teammate. Because it’s come off his teammate, it’s hit his arm. He doesn’t mean to handle the ball. His arm is outstretched, but I doubt – because it’s come off his own teammate – that this will result in a penalty kick. “
