Manchester City captain Kyle Walker insists he still has plenty left in the tank after lifting the Premier League title following victory over West Ham United.
The 34-year-old was elected captain of the Blues in the summer after previous skipper Ilkay Gundogan departed for Barcelona. In his first season wearing the armband, Walker has been almost ever-present in the Premier League making 32 appearances in the competition and 46 in total.
After winning the title on the final day of the season, Sky Sports captured footage of Walker running back to the dressing room shouting: “I am getting too old for this.” Naturally, this led former City defender Micah Richards to ask how long he can carry on playing at the top level.
Walker replied: “I feel young. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
“I feel great, I still feel like I have got my pace. I come to training every day so willing to learn.
“I think once that goes you know that it is probably time to pack up. But this group of lads keep you on your toes and keep you wanting to improve every day.
“It (leaving) was close. I have said it publicly through different circumstances that it was close to happening but with this group of lads, the manager…when we had a talk and a sit down I didn’t want the journey to end.
“And I have been a part of this club and foundation now since 2017. From the moment I walked in to standing here now on this day, I relish going into training and that is the main thing.
“Once you lose that desire, I have said this before, when you drive in thinking ‘I wanna turn back’ that is when you need to pack up. I don’t feel that. I love these lads. I am in debt to them every day.”
Walker’s future appears to be set at the Etihad Stadium, at least for the near future. His City contract is due to expire in 2026 and he still has the support of his teammates too.
Before beginning his interview, Jack Grealish exclaimed: “What a captain,” as Walker entered the frame. The full-back will not have long to celebrate this success because next weekend it is the FA Cup final and after a couple of week’s break he will be jetting off to Germany with England for the European Championships.
