Manchester City have been dealt an injury concern after Ederson was forced off within 10 minutes of their Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
It was almost a nightmare start for Pep Guardiola’s side when Sean Longstaff had the ball in the back of the net. However, it was ruled out for offside after Alexander Isak strayed offside.
Play continued despite the suspicion of offside and as the Sweden international squared it to the Magpies midfielder, both he and City defender Kyle Walker collided with the Brazil shot-stopper. Play stopped for five minutes while Ederson received treatment and the 30-year-old tried to continue but was immediately under pressure following the restart.
He was almost caught in possession following pressure from Newcastle’s forward-line and after they avoided going behind, Ederson was once again down receiving treatment. He was subsequently replaced by Stefan Ortega with the Brazi international suffering with an issue with his left leg.
It is unknown how long Ederson will be sidelined for but doubts are now cast over his involvement in City’s upcoming run. The Citizens face Burnley, Brentford, Everton and Chelsea in their next four.
City went into their clash at St James’ Park looking to reduce Liverpool’s lead at the top of the league to two points, with a win over the Magpies.
It isn’t the first time that Manchester City have been on the receiving end of an injury from a delayed offside flag. During December’s 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park, John Stones was forced off after a collision with Blues forward Beto.
City boss Pep Guardiola was left infuriated by the incident which brought the England defender off. He said: “I don’t understand. It’s so clear, the offside, and now he is injured. They say ‘you’re right Pep, you’re right’… but it’s late. It’s not them [the officials], the rules come from the big bosses… but I don’t understand.”
Guardiola added on Stones’ injury: “It doesn’t look good, but we will see. It’s his ankle.”
Chelsea returns to winning ways after a pulsating match against Fulham at a sunny Stanford Bridge.
It was edgy, often low-quality, and grinding, but the Blues still found a way to grab their three straight Premier League wins since October 2022, thanks to Cole Palmer’s goal at the edge of halftime.
Raheem Sterling was tripped by Fulham defender, Diop in the sixteen-yard box, which led to a Chelsea Penalty, which Cole Palmer converted perfectly, sending Bernd Leno the wrong way.
Chelsea are now up to eighth, levelled on points with Manchester United and two points above Newcastle- who plays Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this evening.
Fulham never quite had the chance to score, but they kept themselves in the game, with their defenders throwing in bodies in the box and their shot-shopper Bernd Leno making some brilliant saves.
After a fiesty afternoon at Stadium Bridge, there have been some changes in the table, and below is what it looks like now
