Vinicius Jr has had yet another outstanding season in a Real Madrid shirt.

The 24-year-old has a claim for being the best player in the world — blending a level of productivity and flair that is often associated with former Brazilian greats.

This season, the former Santos winger was arguably the best player in the Champions League — capping off what was a brilliant campaign with a goal in Real Madrid’s 2-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the final.

However, apart from Vinicius Jr, there are also other candidates who can be viewed as amongst the very best in world football.

One of them is Rodri — who Stewart Robson believes should win the award.

Shaka Hislop shares why Rodri should has been better than Vinicius Jr this year

Manchester City’s number 16 seems to be proving season after season that he is ready to raise the bar.

As Phil Foden stated, Rodri is Manchester City’s “most important player” — emerging as one of, if not their standout performer during his side’s Premier League triumph.

But unlike in previous seasons, the 28-year-old helped Spain win a major international tournament — emerging as one of the few truly elite players to light up the European Championship.

Especially in 2024, the Spaniard has had a better year so far than most other players in the world.

Shaka Hislop feels that Rodri has been superior to Vinicius Jr, stating that he has had a better year than him while pinpointing the gulf in class between their performances for Spain and Brazil respectively.

Hislop said via ESPN FC: “I’m like, right now, I’m thinking Rodri. Before the Euros or the Copa [America], it was a two-man panel: [Jude] Bellingham or Vinicius [Junior]. But because of how poor it was, you start to reassess.”

In 2024, Rodri has certainly been better than Vinicius Jr

When it comes to the ongoing year, there is no question that Rodri has been better than Vinicius Jr.

As exceptional as the electric wideman was in the Champions League, unlike the Manchester City midfielder, he failed to spearhead Brazil to a Copa America triumph.

Apart from Vinicius Jr’s brace against Paraguay in his nation’s 4-2 victory, he had quite a disappointing campaign.

Rodri, unlike the talismanic forward was excellent for both City and Spain — both during his club’s side business end of the season and throughout Euro 2024.

As a result, it is tough to disagree with Shaka Hislop’s Ballon d’Or pick.
