Manchester City broke the record for the longest home winning streak by a Premier League team in all competitions after beating Brighton 2-1 on Saturday.

The Blues took their tally to 21 matches, surpassing Manchester United’s previous record. City’s last home defeat was 2-1 against Brentford in the Premier League last November. If they beat Bournemouth and Young Boys in their next two games at the Etihad, the streak will stretch to a full year.

City responded to back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Wolves – both away – with a nervy victory against Brighton. The hosts dominated the first half thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland, but were almost penalized for failing to exploit their dominance.

Ansu Fati scored for the visitors in the 73rd minute, sparking a tricky final period which worsened when Manuel Akanji was sent off for a second yellow card late in added time.

The victory lifted City into first place immediately after the match, ahead of Arsenal’s evening clash against Chelsea and Tottenham’s home game against Fulham on Monday. The three-time winners are yet to lose three consecutive Premier League games since 2016, under Manuel Pellegrini’s reign.

Pep Guardiola has not lost three league matches in a row since 2015, when he played for Bayern Munich. With the 3-1 victory against RB Leipzig in October, he surpassed Sir Alex Ferguson’s record for the most Champions League wins.
