Manchester City have announced the signing of Claudio Echeverri from River Plate in a deal worth an initial £12.5m plus add-ons. The 18-year-old has signed a contract at the Etihad until June 2028 but will stay at the Argentinian club for the rest of 2024 as part of the arrangement.
City have signed the young midfielder from the same club they signed Julian Alvarez from two years ago. In that deal, City paid £14m for Alvarez and allowed him to spend six months back on loan at River Plate until the beginning of City’s 2022/23 pre-season.
The deal for Echeverri, who is younger than Alvarez was when he signed for City, will take a similar format, with him staying at River Plate until January 2025.
He starred for Argentina in the recent FIFA Under-17 World Cup, scoring a hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-final.
His manager at River Plate is former Blues’ defender Martin Demichelis and has already turned out six times for the club despite only turning 18 three weeks ago.
River Plater sporting director Enzo Francescoli said of Echeverri recently: “He is very calm. Hhe deserves it, he is a great boy. He is very well, with his feet on the ground beyond what happens to him at 18 years old, which is a lot. I spoke to him a couple of days ago. He is very well, calm.”
