Man City star Bernardo Silva confirms transfer plan – “It’s a career and life goal”
Bernardo Silva is starring for Manchester City, scoring twice as they beat Newcastle in the FA Cup on Saturday, though the midfielder is already contemplating the next step in his career
Manchester City star Bernardo Silva has confirmed that he wants to return to Benfica before the end of his career.
Silva scored twice as City beat Newcastle in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday to set up a last four tie against Chelsea. The midfielder is in his seventh year at the Etihad Stadium and is once again starring for Pep Guardiola’s side.
He has already won five Premier League titles, as well as the treble last year. And even though he is only 29, the Portuguese international is contemplating the end of his career.
It was a career that started at Benfica, where he came through the academy before going on to star in the first-team. After winning the domestic treble in 2014, Silva joined Monaco, but he is now keen to return to Benfica before long.

“Is it a long time before I return? I think people are a little tired of that question. There’s already more time left. I’m sure I’ll be back, I don’t know when,” Silva told SIC when asked about returning.
“It’s difficult to time it and say if it’s in two, three, if it’s for the year with Roger Schmidt [laughs]. But I’ve said it several times and I think people get tired of hearing it: without a doubt it’s a career and life goal to return to Benfica.
“Get me into something difficult position. On the one hand, he asks me to return to Benfica and on the other he asks me to say bad things about Benfica’s coach. Imagine that I come back next year and he is my coach? It can’t be [laughs].”

While Silva has admitted he is already thinking about his departure from City, boss Pep Guardiola remains a huge fan. The Spaniard hailed Silva in the wake of the win over Newcastle, insisting he wants to keep him.
“Everybody loves him, and we want him. He’s really important for us. Kevin [De Bruyne] will be back soon, but when you see the schedule after the international break, we have Arsenal, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Madrid,” Guardiola said.
“Three days, three days, three days. Will be really tough, and we have to have everyone. I’ve said many times how important personally and in terms of football Bernardo is. I know we play to win the finals, but to win it, you have to win the earlier rounds.
“We won four Carabao Cup finals in a row and now we are in six FA Cup semi-finals in a row. To run and play the way they did is incredible. Congratulations to the team, no one has done that before. We played really well.
“We were so safe with the ball. Mateo [Kovacic], Rodri and Bernardo [Silva] kept the ball so well. The game was really good. We want to win all of them but sometimes it is not possible because of the quality of the opponents and the schedule we have.”
