Manchester City and Chelsea could be in line for a stunning financial boost if they can win the Club World Cup this summer.

The 32-team competition, which is set to take place in the US, will start on 15 June and end on 13 July.

The overall prize fund will be worth £775million, with £407million divided between all the clubs taking part and £368million awarded on a performance-related basis.

European clubs will earn more for taking part than teams from other continents as the money awarded for participation is based on sporting and commercial criteria.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League sides are likely to earn a guaranteed £31million for their participation.

Borson previously told Football Insider Man City and Chelsea have a “big” advantage over their top-flight rivals due to the money on offer from the Club World Cup.

Man City set for £19m payout

Borson revealed Man City will probably earn around £19million before kicking a ball in the Club World Cup.

He told Football Insider: “If you look at the total prize pot and then how it’s broken down, in reality the vast majority of it is going to Europe.

“There are 12 teams that qualify from Europe. One of them is Red Bull Salzburg, so you can kind of put them to one side.

“In terms of taking a lot of it, they’re going to only get a $12million (£9.3million) participation fee compared to the average, which is probably going to be about $25million (£19.3million) with City and over $35million (£27million) with Bayern Munich just for participation.

“When you do the maths and kind of break it down, the likelihood is that the European teams win two from three of the group games. Maybe not Salzburg, but most of them, so most of them are going to qualify.

“Most of them are going to get $4million (£3.1million) for winning two games, maybe $5-6million (£3.7-4.6million) in the group stages. Most of them are going to get to the round of 16, and that’s $7.5million (£5.8million).

“Maybe five of them are going to get the quarter-final at $13.5million (£10.4million). These numbers are going to add up really quickly.

“Now that means that a good chunk of those 12 European teams are going to make $40-50million (£31-£39million) minimum. Two or three of them are going to make a lot more.

“You would think the winner is coming from Europe and they are going to take $125million (£97million). That is very significant.”
