Manchester City plans to sign £50 million Powerful player after Euros 2024 but this has to leave first

Manchester City have seen numerous players leave the club over previous years.

Since Pep Guardiola took charge of the Manchester club back in 2016, many names from the senior ranks and City’s academy have waved goodbye to the Etihad Stadium.

In the midst of the latest summer transfer window, some behind-the-scenes information has come to light regarding one player, who has spent some time with City previously, that the club have considered bringing back to Manchester.

Man City have spoken about signing Jeremie Frimpong

A recent report from The Athletic had this to say on the matter.

It said: “Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong was also reported to be of interest.

“City have discussed the Netherlands international in recent months, but it is a deal that would only have been accelerated if Kyle Walker were to leave (with interest from Saudi Arabia).

“That does not seem likely.”

Frimpong has turned into a star since early days at City

The Dutchman was part of City’s youth ranks between 2016 and 2019 before he moved to Celtic.

After making 51 appearances for the Scottish club and winning a domestic Treble in the 2019/20 season, Frimpong joined his current club, Bayer Leverkusen, in the 2021 January transfer window.

Since then, the 23-year-old has featured in 142 games for the German side across all competitions, scoring 25 goals and delivering 32 assists along the way.

Described as a “powerful” player by Neil Lennon in an interview with Glasgow World back in July last year, Frimpong scored nine goals and delivered the same number of assists during Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga winning campaign last season, predominantly playing in a right-wing-back role.

Even though Walker, who Micah Richards recently criticised for his latest performance for England, appeared in 47 games across all competitions last season for City, we feel that Frimpong could be an ideal long-term replacement for the 34-year-old.

Now that it has been claimed that it’s currently unlikely that Walker, who City paid £50m to sign back in 2017, will be leaving the club anytime soon, perhaps a move for the former City youth player won’t be on the cards for this summer.

Alan Brazil discussed England’s performance at Euro 2024 ahead of their quarter-final match against Switzerland, highlighting the opportunity for the team to make a statement by beating a top team in the tournament. Concerns among supporters have been raised about why manager Gareth Southgate does not replicate the tactics of managers like Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta to showcase the strengths of the players.

Brazil pointed out that England’s playing style does not resemble that of Manchester City or Arsenal, two teams associated with dominating possession and pressing the opposition intensively. He suggested that Guardiola would be frustrated by England’s lack of urgency in pressing and retaining possession, as well as the use of players like Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham in unfamiliar positions.

The lack of intensity in England’s press, disjointed tactics, and struggles in possession could lead Guardiola to question Southgate’s player profiling and tactical decisions. Brazil’s remarks indicate that there are areas where England can improve to match the standards set by top clubs like Manchester City.
