When Manchester City finally gave the deal their green light, it spelled the end of two years of work.
Justification, too, for the club’s refusal to give on a player who had first emerged on their radar back in 2022.
Only time will tell whether he’s worth the wait.
But after a couple of seasons spent largely on the Manchester City bench, one of the more seldom-seen members of Pep Guardiola’s Premier League-dominating roster cannot hide his excitement with regular first-team football in his sights again.
Sergio Gomez has sealed an £8.5 million move to La Liga outfit Real Sociedad.
The former Barcelona youngster moves back to his home country for the first time since a loan spell at Huesca, inking a six-year contract at Anoeta.

Sergio Gomez leaves Manchester City for Real Sociedad
“I am very happy with this opportunity, to come to the club,” Gomez tells Mundo Deportivo. “Very excited to start training with Imanol (Alguacil, the (La Real coach) and my team-mates.”
Gomez, the versatile full-back, joined Man City from Anderlecht back in 2022.

By his own admission, Real Sociedad attempted to lure him to the Basque country around the same time, the twice Spanish champions finally getting their mitts on a long-term transfer target.
“We had been in contact with the club for a couple of years,” Gomez explains. “We had had a few calls with (sporting director Robert) Olabe and, in the end, it happened.
“I have always liked the way Imanol plays. I am a bit of a ball player and that is a bit what he is looking for. The club can help me grow and continue to mature and progress as a player. That is what I am looking for and what Imanol conveyed to me when I spoke to him.”
Gomez, who will earn the number 21 shirt, leaves Man City after winning five trophies in just two years.
The well-travelled 23-year-old was never anything more than a useful back-up option, however, starting only two Premier League games in sky blue. Gomez featured for only 49 minutes during the entirety of the 2023/24 top-flight campaign.
Shirt number is in tribute to David Silva
“Now, it’s my turn to work as hard as possible to help the team and the club achieve its objectives,” Gomez adds. “I’m going to give my all, my best, to help the club.
“It’s a long contract. I hope I can be at the club for many years, that will be good news for everyone and that’s my intention.”
Gomez follows in the footsteps of Man City legend David Silva.
The silky Spaniard joined Sociedad after years of bewitching Premier League defenders with his wizardry. Gomez now dons the 21 shirt as tribute to the man who came to be adored by the City supporters with exactly that number on his back.
“I have not spoken to David Silva,” reveals Gomez. “But I did speak to him when he came to visit Manchester. Wearing the number 21 at City was a privilege for me because I liked David Silva since I was very young.
“Now, I am happy to come to the club where he has been for the last few years.”
