“One of the best”… Paul Merson says ‘word – class’ Man City player doesn’t get the credit he deserves
Former Premier League player Paul Merson has expressed his belief that Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden is not receiving the recognition he deserves for his exceptional performances this season.
Foden, who has recorded nine goals and five assists in 26 Premier League games, is having one of his best seasons under manager Pep Guardiola.
Merson, speaking on Soccer Saturday, praised Foden as “outstanding” and even suggested that he could become the best player in the world.
He said: “I think he’s outstanding. I think he’ll be the best in the world, 100%. [He’s] not far off it now on his day.
“On his day, I think he’s world-class. We have to get him in the England team, he’s not a sure thing of starting in the England team.
“I think he’s unbelievable, he does everything right. He runs without the ball, he runs with the ball, he can play in loads of positions, top players can play anywhere. He’s world-class, I think he’s world-class now.
“I don’t think he gets anywhere near the credit and the accolades he should get. I think he’s top draw, I’m a big fan, I could sit and watch him every day of the week, he is, I’d say he’s one of the best players in the world now, in my opinion.”
Statistically, Foden has been a standout performer for City this season. He leads the team in carries into the final third and ranks highly in shot-creating actions and goal-creating actions.
With a strong season rating of 7.38/10 from WhoScored, Foden is proving to be one of City’s key players alongside the likes of Rodri and Erling Haaland.
Merson’s admiration for Foden’s talents is evident, and he believes that the young midfielder is one of the best players in the world.
If Foden continues to deliver impactful performances and helps City secure the Premier League title, it is likely that he will start receiving the recognition he deserves on a broader scale.
Overall, Foden’s contributions on the pitch have not gone unnoticed by Merson and other football pundits. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see if Foden can maintain his exceptional form and further establish himself as one of the top talents in world football.
