Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland praise an “incredible” Manchester United star after the derby

Manchester City defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in another painful derby.

There was a lot of optimism in January after United defeated City 2-1 at Old Trafford. Last Sunday’s result yielded many negative points.

City won the match 3-0, which underlines that the gap between the two teams is not closed by Erik ten Hag’s team.

But if you’re looking for something to be a little positive about, it was Andre Onana’s performance. Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images

Pep Guardiola praises Andre Onana

Andre Onana made seven saves for Manchester United against City, playing a key role in keeping the result respectable.

No save was better than his diving two-handed save to push away Erling Haaland’s point-blank header late in the first half.

The save was praised by City boss Pep Guardiola, who told BBC Sport: “Erling had an incredible chance at the end of the first half and Onana made an incredible save.”

Guardiola also praised his own keeper after stopping a Scott McTominay effort at the other end.

“They had a chance with McTominay and Ederson made a great save, but in the second half, after the second goal, we were at our best.”

Striker Erling Haaland also praised Andre Onana and made one of his saves after halftime.

He told City media: “It was an incredible save just before half-time.” In the second half, he made another fantastic save when I headed him away. It’s like that. We won.”

Andre Onana couldn’t do everything

Andre Onana was arguably Manchester United’s best player on the pitch, which unfortunately tells its own story about field players.

He saved a crucial penalty against Copenhagen in midweek to secure the victory, which was a huge confidence boost and could prove a turning point in his United career.

It’s nice to see him playing well. He has been solid since the international break.

When he does this, Erik ten Hag has one less problem because otherwise he has his hands full everywhere else.

Ten Hag praises Manchester United teenager breakthrough as he now has to start against Newcastle

Manchester United must make changes for their upcoming Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.

After a bad result, Erik ten Hag has a habit of sending the same eleven players onto the field in the next match to try to prove his point.

But he won’t be able to do that against Newcastle in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup this week. There are too many players who deserve opportunities.

One of them is Alejandro Garnacho – a second-half substitute against City who came on when United were already 2-0 down.

Ten Hag praises Garnacho

Erik ten Hag was asked about his substitutions after the 3-0 defeat to City, which he appeared to have performed poorly.

He told club media he wanted to “inject a bit of energy”, citing Alejandro Garnacho’s abilities.

Ten Hag said: “We have substitutes, so we have Mason Mount, we have Alejandro Garnacho and we know he can change matches.” We bring them in and that’s the argument in favor.

Garnacho changed the game against City last season by assisting the winner. However, he was not in attendance yesterday as United were just a fraction of the team that took all three points in the last league derby in January.

Garnacho must start

Erik ten Hag believes in Alejandro Garnacho, but he needs to start showing it. The 19-year-old deserves a chance to start.

There’s been a lot of debate about whether Garnacho is better as a starter or a substitute – but guess what… Marcus Rashford isn’t very good as a starter at the moment. Rashford is now without a goal in nine consecutive starts for Manchester United. It’s time for a change.

As for Garnacho, he actually scored a goal during his last start.

It happened at the end of September in the Carabao Cup third round against Crystal Palace, when the youngster scored the opening goal in a 3-0 win.

Since then, he has been treated harshly and used only as a substitute. With the Carabao Cup resuming this week, it seems like the right time to reinsert the

Argentine into the lineup.
