It was feared Manchester City’s challenge for a historic back-to-back Treble haul of trophies was in danger of taking a major hit during their Champions League trip to Real Madrid

Pep Guardiola has escaped a food poisoning shocker that could have damaged Manchester City’s Treble bid.

Kevin De Bruyne was taken ill ahead of City’s Champions League thriller with Real Madrid in the Spanish capital this week. The Belgium midfielder went down with sickness and vomiting in the dressing room – and was forced to miss the 3-3 draw in the Bernabeu.

De Bruyne believes it was something he ate in the team hotel a few hours ahead of kick off. And City were worried he wouldn’t be the only member of the squad to be struck down.

Losing a host of stars would have been Guardiola’s worst nightmare as he closes in on back-to-back Trebles. City host Luton in the Premier League on Saturday (April 13), before taking on Real in the second leg of their quarter final at the Etihad on Wednesday.

The champions then face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi finals at Wembley. But thankfully De Bruyne’s illness was an isolated incident, and he has now returned to training ahead of the visit of the Hatters.

Guardiola is even hoping De Bruyne is well enough to return to his starting XI. But the Spaniard is expected to be without Kyle Walker once again.

Walker has been sidelined for the last three weeks with a damaged hamstring he suffered on England duty, a significant loss particularly up against Real’s electric left winger Vinicius Jr.

Guardiola is desperate to have the defender back in action, but will give him as much time as possible to prove his fitness ahead of the crunch showdown with the Spanish giants.
