Bayern Munich’s stars have opened up on what training under Pep Guardiola was really like – with one admitting he’d have headaches after sessions.

Guardiola took the bold decision to leave Barcelona in 2012 – taking a year-long hiatus in New York. The Catalan returned the following season as the new boss at Bayern, who had just won the Champions League.

Speaking in BBC’s documentary, Pep Guardiola: Chasing Perfection, Manuel Neuer admitted Guardiola had a sizeable task when he checked in for pre-season. He said: “We’d just won the treble, the biggest success in Bayern’s history.

“He had to keep the success coming. And that wasn’t an easy task… Sometimes he stopped and sent us to the changing rooms, he got the hump and said ‘If you don’t want to learn it, then you won’t’.”

Journalist Raphael Honigstein then took over the voiceover, adding: “We heard a lot of players saying ‘we don’t understand what he’s trying to do’ and ‘it’s too much!’

Pep Guardiola was at the helm of Bayern Munich for three years

“I remember Joshua Kimmich once telling a colleague of mine he’d come away from every training session with a massive headache because of the amount of things he had to think about.”

Kimmich would be one of the standout players under Guardiola at Bayern, with the boss taking the young German under his wing. After one game in 2016, Guardiola and Kimmich appeared to be having a heated debate after the full-time whistle.

Speaking after the game, Pep said: “I told him that he’s perhaps one of the best centre-backs in the world… I love this boy.”

Guardiola ultimately failed to win the Champions League at Bayern – as the Bavarian side were dumped out of Europe by Atletico Madrid on away goals that year.

The Catalan was eventually able to get his hands on the Champions League trophy again when he finally took Manchester City to the promised land, seven years after he first touched down in Manchester.
