Liverpool is flying at the moment, with goals being scored from a wide variety of sources. In the last two matches, eight different players have scored, with another providing an assist.
What makes this more remarkable is that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are not in this goal contributing nonet. The breadth of options at Jürgen Klopp’s disposal suggests the Reds could very easily sign off his farewell campaign in trophy winning style.
When Liverpool have scored four goals in three successive league matches for only the third time in the Premier League era, breaking an expected goal record in the win over Newcastle, you know the red machine is in full effect. Its rivals for trophies at home and abroad will undoubtedly have taken notice of their form.
One man who is very aware is Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, and Liverpool’s recent run obviously won’t have escaped Mauricio Pochettino’s attention either. These men will have a huge say in how successful the Reds’ 2023/24 campaign will be. With an eye on this pair of trophy rivals, here are the two Liverpool.com stories from today that you shouldn’t miss.
Pep Guardiola makes Liverpool title admission
Considering City had won its last six home matches against Burnley by an aggregate score line of 28-0, it was no surprise that the defending league champions won easily enough on Wednesday evening. It was therefore imperative that Liverpool took three points from their much harder fixture against Chelsea and the Reds delivered in style.
Speaking after his side’s victory, Guardiola acknowledged that his title rivals are performing well. “When you see Liverpool, every game they are better than the opponent,” he said, via Liverpool World. James Martin has more on the City manager’s praise of the Reds, with further quotes, here.
Moisés Caicedo just proved Jürgen Klopp right
The only Chelsea player who was probably satisfied with his performance at Anfield on Wednesday was goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović, and even then he was beaten four times. One man in blue who was very uninspiring was former Liverpool transfer target Moisés Caicedo.
While he only misplaced three passes, the Ecuadorian made fewer ball recoveries than Harvey Elliott— who only came on after the Chelsea midfielder had been substituted — and his only attempted tackle was unsuccessful. It is taking Caicedo a long time to adjust following his summer move from Brighton.
Klopp has previously joked that Liverpool were ‘lucky’ not to sign him and so far that looks to be the case. David Anderson takes a closer look at Caicedo and his poor performance here.
