Pep Guardiola responds to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s claim that trophies ‘mean more’ to Liverpool than Man City

Trent Alexander-Arnold claimed recent trophies mean more to Liverpool than Man City.

Pep Guardiola has responded to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s claim that trophies mean more to Liverpool fans than supporters of Manchester City.

Liverpool and City meet at Anfield on Sunday in a match being billed as a potential Premier League title-decider.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently one point clear of City at the top of the table, with Arsenal a point further back.

Alexander-Arnold has stoked tensions ahead of the match by claiming that trophies mean more to Liverpool fans than Man City in recent years.

He told FourFourTwo: “It’s tough. We’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

“Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.

“How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.”

Those comments have riled up several City players, including Erling Haaland and Ruben Dias.

“If he wants to say that, OK,” Haaland said. “I’ve been here one year and I won the treble and it was quite a nice feeling. I don’t think he knows this feeling. That’s what I felt last season, it was quite nice.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Dias added: “We’ve won a lot in this club, especially last year with the Treble. I think it’s pretty certain between us, between our fans, how much it meant to all of us.

“At the end of the day you can only have certain emotions if you actually win stuff. A Treble is a feeling you can only know how it feels when you actually do it.”

Pep Guardiola has now waded into the debate – giving a short response when asked about Alexander-Arnold, who is currently sidelined with a knee problem.

“I wish him a speedy recovery and he comes back as quickly as possible,” said Guardiola, refusing to comment further.

Liverpool manager Klopp was also asked about Alexander-Arnold’s comments at his pre-match press conference, and also gave a blunt answer.

Nothing wrong with what Trent said,” said Klopp.

Liverpool and Man City fans clash over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘success’ comment as defender branded ‘salty’

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has spoken about Manchester City’s recent success.

Liverpool and Manchester City fans have clashed on social media after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent comments about the reigning champions.

This season, both Liverpool and City have been fighting at the top in a bid to become Premier League champions.

This weekend, the two top teams in the land are set to clash in what will be a mouth-watering encounter at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the match, Alexander-Arnold spoke about City’s recent trophies.

As reported by the Daily Mirror, the Liverpool vice-captain said to FourFourTwo: “It’s tough. We’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

“Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.”

Alexander-Arnold added: “How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.”

Reacting on social media, one City fan said: “Congratulations on your “means more” Premier League titles.”

Another tweeted: “Wonder why Trent Alexander Arnold is so salty.”

A third fan added: “That bid for Caceido says otherwise.”

Meanwhile, a Liverpool fan replied: “Sadly Klopp deserved way more. He won’t be remembered by other fans. But Liverpool fans know how much he did for us and it means so much more to us.”

Another commented: “Our League cup got more hype than their treble….”

Someone else added: “Trent literally dunked man City Legacy there lol he’s spot on.”

Speaking about this year’s title race, Alexander-Arnold continued: “From the turn of the year, City switch it on and it’s a difficult machine to stop.

“But we’ve shown in the past that we’ve been able to do it and there’s no reason why we can’t go and match them this season. We’re excited to be involved with City and know we’re in a good position.

“I’m sure they’ll be motivated, as are we. It’s going to be an exciting end.”

Joleon Lescott hits back at Trent Alexander-Arnold over trophy claim as Rio Ferdinand says ‘shots fired’

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes recent trophy wins mean more to Liverpool fans than Man City supporters.

Joleon Lescott has fired back at Trent Alexander-Arnold following his controversial comments about the meaning of trophies for Liverpool and Manchester City supporters.

The two Premier League sides meet at Anfield on Sunday in a match being billed as a potential title-decider – despite the involvement of a third team, Arsenal, in the title race this season.

Liverpool are currently one point clear of City at the top of the table, with Arsenal a point further back.

A win for either Liverpool or City this weekend will make them strong favourites to win the league, while a draw would seemingly put Arsenal in pole position for the title.

Former City defender Lescott has now responded to those claims, taking issue with the suggestion that trophies mean more to Liverpool supporters.

“The thing I would question is the fans. I don’t think you can say any game, any trophy means more to your fans than another set of fans because it’s equally as important to anyone.”

His co-host Rio Ferdinand then said: “Wow. Shots fired. He’s lucky it’s at Anfield,” referring to this weekend’s game.

To which Lescott replied: “Yeah, that’s obviously a factor.”

Erling Haaland fires brutal dig at Trent Alexander-Arnold in trophy row ahead of Liverpool vs Man City

Haaland has hit back at the Liverpool star.

Erling Haaland has hit back at Trent Alexander-Arnold after the Liverpool star’s trophy claim about Man City.

Liverpool and City will go head-to-head in an eagerly-anticipated clash at Anfield on Sunday, one that could end up deciding the Premier League title race.

Liverpool are one point clear of City at the top of the table, with Jurgen Klopp’s side looking to win the title for the first time since 2020.

With so much riding on the match, perhaps it was inevitable that mind games would crank up a notch or two in the days leading up to game day.

That’s exactly what happened this week when Trent Alexander-Arnold claimed that success “means more” to Liverpool fans than City supporters, because their club doesn’t have the same financial muscle.

The 25-year-old said: “How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, it probably means more to our fans.”

Now, three days out from the huge clash, City striker Haaland has hit back at his opponent.

“If he wants to say that.. OK,” Haaland told Sky Sports News when asked to comment on Alexander-Arnold’s claim.

“I’ve been here one year and I won the treble. It was quite a nice feeling. I don’t think he [Alexander-Arnold] knows exactly this feeling.”

Haaland added: “They can talk as much as they want. He can talk as much as he wants. I don’t know why he does that but I don’t mind.”

Haaland’s response came after former City defender Joleon Lescott questioned the Liverpool star’s comments.

Haaland enjoyed a sensational first season at City following his £51 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

The Norwegian striker scored 36 league goals to break the Premier League single season goals record, and notched 52 goals in 53 games in all competitions.

Haaland finished the season with Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup winner’s medals around his neck as City won a historic treble.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s brother and agent ‘likes’ post criticising Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp over signing

The post has been liked on X (Twitter).

The brother and agent of Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has ‘liked’ a post which criticises the Reds over one of their new signings.

Jurgen Klopp’s side brought in four new players this summer, with all the additions strengthening their midfield.

Alexis Mac Allister’s arrival was confirmed once the transfer window opened, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch also moving to Anfield before the window closed.

The Reds have started strongly this season, winning five and drawing one of their opening six Premier League matches. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in particular have played significant roles.

But Alexander-Arnold’s brother and agent has ‘liked’ a post which criticises the Reds over the deal completed to sign Endo.

Tyler Alexander-Arnold liked a post on X (Twitter) from Liverpool supporter @LFCLaurie, which reads: “Spending £16m on Endo and handing him a four-year deal is exactly why we need a sporting director in.

“It made no sense and still makes no sense. I love Klopp but his talent ID can stink at times

Tyler Alexander-Arnold is part of the PLG Group agency, where he is listed as a director and handles his brother’s affairs.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, is signed to the agency as part of a co-deal.

As well as the Reds right-back, PLG also represent his Liverpool team-mate Andrew Robertson, West Ham star Jarrod Bowen and Brentford defender Aaron Hickey.

The agency also represents several Liverpool youngsters, who all play for the club’s age group sides.

Endo, meanwhile, has made two starts and three substitute appearances since joining Liverpool from Stuttgart in August.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-1 win over West Ham, in which the Japan captain had a three-minute cameo as a substitute, Klopp explained: “He needs to get used to the things here. Wataru is a super guy, very calm and very polite and that cost him the first two weeks, maybe.

“You saw that today he is there, he will help us a lot, he will play games, he will start games and all these kinds of things. It’s all good, he had already three or four games now for us in a very short period. That is what counts.

“Wataru is a super important part of the squad and I am really happy to have him.”
