Phil Foden does not expect Liverpool or Arsenal to let up in what could be the widest Premier League title race in years.

 

 

Pep Guardiola has seen some ferocious two-horse races during his time in England with both clubs pushing Manchester City hard in different seasons. And with just two points separating the top three in February, each side is well-positioned to win the title.

 

City’s manager said last week that he does not expect their rivals to drop many points across the rest of the season, forcing the Blues to maintain high standards if they are to have a chance of winning an unprecedented fourth Premier League title in a row. That is a view shared by Foden as he looks to replicate what he has previously achieved with his teammates.

 

“Liverpool and Arsenal are playing really well at the moment, and I don’t see them dropping many points – that’s the standard of the Premier League,” he said. “I think it’s going to be close – we have to be at our best form and play our best football if we want to win the league. We have to take it game by game and not think too far ahead.

 

 

“If we want to win the league, we have to keep putting points on the table and not slip up – we’ve done that and done it in the past.”

 

Foden scored the second hat-trick of his career at Brentford on Monday to turn that game around and earn a precious three points for his team. The 23-year-old is happy to have Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne back after injuries, but still wants to be a player that Guardiola knows can win a match for the side.

 

“I’ve been getting goals and assists recently and playing more centrally – I think that’s one of the reasons why. It’s important for me to be an attacker and get the goals and assists,” he said.

 

“The team needs to rely on players like me to find a solution – I want to be that player. I’m playing with quality and world-class players – they always find me in good areas and it’s down to them. It’s a little bit on me – running in behind and trying to score. I want to be threatening in behind and try to get goals and assists.”
