According to football London, Arsenal may be without midfielder Jorginho for their important Premier League match against Manchester City on Sunday, as Brazilian club Flamengo intensifies efforts to sign him before the January transfer window closes.
The 33-year-old Italian, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023, has made 70 appearances for the club but has struggled for consistent playing time this season, starting only six Premier League matches. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Jorginho is reportedly considering a move, and Flamengo has offered him a three-year deal worth £8.5 million. However, the player is holding out for a contract closer to £11 million, which has led to a temporary pause in negotiations.
Flamengo is eager to secure the experienced midfielder during this transfer window, and representatives from both Flamengo and Jorginho are in discussions with Arsenal about terminating his contract six months early.
Brazilian reporters have indicated that Jorginho may not be part of Arsenal’s squad for the upcoming Manchester City game due to the ongoing transfer situation.
Despite the uncertainty, Arsenal is keen to retain Jorginho, with manager Mikel Arteta acknowledging his importance to the squad alongside fellow midfielder Thomas Partey. Arteta has expressed a desire to delay contract discussions, focusing instead on the team’s current objectives.
However, reports suggest that Arsenal is already planning for a future without Jorginho, with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi reportedly lined up as a potential replacement. As Italy’s 2026 World Cup campaign approaches, Jorginho is keen to secure more regular playing time, making his next move vital for his career.
