Pundit says if De Bruyne made the same assist as Aston Villa ace, it’d go down as one of his greatest-ever

Jamie Redknapp believes if Kevin De Bruyne made the same assist as Douglas Luiz against Sheffield United, it would go down as one of his greatest.

The assist that the popular pundit is referring to was the Brazilian’s wondrous outside-the-foot pass to set up Ollie Watkins’ strike against Sheffield United during Aston Villa’s 5-0 win at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

While the pass was one that deserves plenty of plaudits, Jamie Redknapp believes Douglas Luiz produced a piece of skill that even Kevin De Bruyne would have been proud of.

Unsurprisingly, the Manchester City midfielder’s name tends to often get brought up when discussing assists.

After the Belgian maestro’s clever pass that led to Julian Alvarez’s second goal against Burnley, he only needs to set eight more goals up to leapfrog Cesc Fabregas to have the second-most assists in Premier League history.

Despite Kevin De Bruyne producing some of the finest passes over the years to set up a wide array of goals, Jamie Redknapp thinks that if he made the same assist as Douglas Luiz for Ollie Watkins’ goal, it would have gone down as one of his best-ever.

“This is one of the best passes you could ever see. If Kevin De Bruyne made this pass, we’d be talking about it being one of his greatest-ever assists”, he said on Sky Sports.

“The way he flicks it with the outside of his right foot, it’s magnificent. What a pass.”

Egregious take about Kevin De Bruyne

While Jamie Redknapp was justified in lauding the glorious pass from Douglas Luiz, Kevin De Bruyne has plenty of better assists in his catalogue, in our view.

For instance, the 32-year-old’s volleyed pass to set up Leroy Sane’s strike against Arsenal in a 2-2 draw between both sides in April 2017 or the five-time Premier League winner’s miraculous assist for the German in his side’s 7-2 win against Stoke City in the ‘Centurions’ season.

Similarly, De Bruyne’s outside-the-boot cross for Stones’ header in City’s 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace in the 2020/2021 campaign was arguably an even superior skill to Luiz’s.

As a result, Jamie Redknapp’s declaration regarding Kevin De Bruyne may be a bit of a stretch.
