Some Manchester City fans want Matheus Nunes to play left wing against Manchester United

Manchester City are taking on bitter rivals Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend – and some fans are calling for Pep Guardiola to throw the Red Devils a curveball with Matheus Nunes.

City are seeking to keep their brilliant form of late going to keep the pressure on their title rivals.

City went 18 games unbeaten last night as they beat Luton Town 6-2 in the FA Cup courtesy of masterclass performances from Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

Haaland scored five of City’s six goals, with Mateo Kovacic grabbing one late on. De Bruyne assisted four of the Norwegian’s strikes, to take his tally to 11 assists for the season in just 12 games – remarkably, only four other players in Europe’s top five leagues have made more.

It was a stellar performance from City, and it was a good outing for Matheus Nunes.

Although he hasn’t impressed some pundits such as Craig Burley, Nunes has slowly been finding his feet, and is looking more and more comfortable in that sky-blue shirt.

Last night at Kenilworth Road, he mainly took up central positions, but there were several occasions where he popped up on the left side.

On the opening goal, he collected the ball on the left and slipped a lovely ball through to De Bruyne who crossed for Haaland to score.

It was this action, and a few other things that he did that have now led some City fans on social media to make a fresh tactical suggestion to Pep Guardiola about the Portugal international.

Jack Grealish sadly went off injured against Luton last night, and it looks like he’s facing another spell on the sidelines.

He would likely have started against United.

Jeremy Doku is probably the main contender now to play from the left, but he did not particularly shine against Luton and actually frustrated Pep late on in the second-half when he lost the ball cheaply.

Oscar Bobb could be an option, as could more senior options like Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden.

But some City fans believe Matheus Nunes might be someone worth considering for that left side.

He played wide left against Bournemouth and did a good job and he does have the attributes to operate there. It’s a position he played in a few times at Wolves, and we know that he is rapid and he protects the ball quite well. So some reckon he could be worth a punt:

100%!! Good dribbling, speed and confidence. Kovacic’s ball carriage is also elite!

A decent player with versatility & quick in transition.

Just need to be more intelligent in final third with his passes & shooting.

I actually prefer Nunes on the left wing than Doku https://t.co/uIg0GxJbm7

I’d start Nunes on the left against United instead of Doku. An extra midfielder, better ball retention.

Doku, Bobb or Nunes on the left for the derby on Sunday with Grealish out for the game. I’m slightly leaning towards Nunes tbh
