We have no choice but to sell –  Manchester City confirms the exit of academy graduate Liam Delap

Manchester City is set to sell Academy graduate striker Liam Delap to Ipswich Town in a permanent move within the next 24 hours. Delap, who has been on loan at various Championship clubs, has struggled to find a pathway into Pep Guardiola’s plans due to the presence of other strikers like Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez. Therefore, a move to Ipswich Town provides him with the opportunity to play consistent Premier League football.

The deal involves an initial transfer fee of £15 million, with a potential £5 million in add-ons. Manchester City has also included a 20% sell-on clause and a buy-back option in the agreement with Ipswich Town, showing their long-term investment in Delap’s future. The move has already been finalized, with Delap passing a medical and agreeing to terms with Ipswich Town.

Manchester City will have a chance to face Delap sooner than expected, as Ipswich Town will visit the Etihad Stadium for a Premier League game on Saturday 24 August. This marks an important step in Delap’s career as he transitions to playing in the top-flight under the guidance of a new team and manager.

Manchester City are set to take their summer earnings to over £50m, without spending a penny yet, all for players with only 21 appearances between them.

When Liam Delap leaves Manchester City for up to £20m this summer, it will continue a proud record of the City Football Academy in selling dozens of young players in recent years.

Last year, City’s academy raised over £50m (with an extra £13m possible in add-ons), following from £47m the year before. The CFA is set to surpass those figures with Delap’s deal to either Ipswich or Southampton.

Southampton have been responsible for over a third of the roughly £150m of sales, and will take that percentage higher if they beat Ipswich to Delap’s signature.

They signed Taylor Harwood-Bellis this summer for a pre-agreed £20m, while Tommy Doyle joined Wolves for £5m in a similar deal. Delap’s £20m will add to the £5m in a sell-on clause held on Douglas Luiz. Between those players, City have made more than £50m from players with just 21 appearances between them. In fact, Luiz never played a competitive game for the Blues.

The regular flow of millions coming into the City bank accounts from academy players is perhaps another reason for why their summer has been quiet so far.

Other clubs had to scramble to meet the June 30 deadline to satisfy the deadline for submitting Profit and Sustainability Rules accounts. Some swapped unproven young players for millions, others had to sell players quickly to avoid points deductions that befell Nottingham Forest and Everton last season.

City were able to stay well clear of that circus, and have pressed ahead on their tried-and-tested method of raising money from players developed through the academy. When they do make their move in the transfer market, they will do so backed by a healthy warchest and with the knowledge that the academy continues to go from strength to strength when it comes to selling Premier League-ready stars.
