Manchester United fans have bemoaned VAR after Rasmus Hojlund was denied an equaliser and his first goal for the club against Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Reds started the match spectacularly and were enjoying a good spell of pressure on the away side’s goal. However, against the run of play found themselves behind.

Unsurprisingly, Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his former club tapping in from close range after a momentary lapse in concentration. United have managed to rally after falling behind with Marcus Rashford close to not equalising after hitting the woodwork.

But, Erik ten Hag thought his new investment had brought his team back level shortly before the break. A tricky run by Rashford allowed him to get to the byline before pulling it back to Hojlund who guided the ball home.

Celebrations were cut short though as VAR were quick to notice a fault in the build-up to the goal. Officials chose to look at whether the ball had gone out of play when Rashford got to the byline.

After a short deliberation at Stockley Park, VAR chose to rule out the goal because the ball had gone out of play. By the letter of the law, all of the ball must be off the pitch for it to be deemed out.
