Onana desperate to prove his worth despite shaky start at Man Utd
The Cameroon shot stopper says that his Manchester United career has yet to take off after making a mistake against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Andre Onana joined as a substitute for long-serving custodian David De Gea during the summer transfer window, having previously worked with manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
Onana, who was praised for his ability to play out from the back while at Inter Milan, has struggled throughout United’s shaky start to the season.
They are on their worst defensive streak since December 1978, threatening to erase the progress ten Hag made during his first season in charge.
Following a strong start for United inside the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, the 27-year-old let Leroy Sane’s shot underneath him to give Bayern the lead.
Serge Gnabry extended their lead less than five minutes later, but Rasmus Hojlund gave the visitors hope.
Before there was late drama, Harry Kane would add a penalty after Chrisitan Eriksen was ruled to have handled inside the box.
Casemiro scored a second for United, only for Mathys Tel to score a fourth for the German champions, but the Brazilian would then score a late third in the dying embers, but there was no more time to stage a comeback.
“We got off to a great start. We lost control of the game as a result of my error. It’s a challenging circumstance for us, and especially for me.
“Because of that blunder, the squad was one down. I must learn from it and be strong”
“Life here has not been easy, the games atmosphere and tempo is quite different from where I came from at Milan. It’s a different ball game altogether. However, I believe things will get better”
“I’m pleased with the team’s comeback. I’ve got a lot to prove. My first few weeks in Manchester have not gone as planned. This was one of my poorest performances. We have high goals. It’s a difficult time. We must stick together and work hard.”
