Jurgen Klinsmann claims Man United sacked ‘special’ manager far too soon, he was the ‘perfect fit’

Jurgen Klinsmann feels Manchester United were too quick to dismiss one of their previous managers.

Manchester United are yet to land on the right man since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure back in 2013.

Erik ten Hag is the latest manager to enjoy a bright start to life at Old Trafford only for it all to come crashing down soon after.

Whether or not Ten Hag remains at the club beyond the summer remains to be seen but United have had their fair share of managers over the past 11 years.

None of them were shown the exit door as quickly as David Moyes, who lasted just 10 months after replacing Ferguson.

United were struggling in seventh place at the time after winning the Premier League title the year before under Ferguson.

Yet, Jurgen Klinsmann remains convinced Moyes was the right man for the job at the time.

Klinsmann says David Moyes’ Man United dismissal came too soon

Speaking on ESPN FC, Klinsmann spoke about Moyes’ United departure and admitted he still believes the Scotsman was the ‘perfect fit’ for the club.

He said: “I always thought David Moyes was the absolute perfect fit, and I still think it today, for Man United. But they didn’t even give him a year.

“Ferguson was given four or five years to win his first trophies. Today, it’s a very tricky environment for managers and the clubs as well.”

During his brief tenure at United, Moyes took charge of 51 games – winning 27, drawing nine and losing 15. His side netted 86 goals while conceding 54 times.

Of course, Moyes has since gone on to enjoy success at West Ham and guided the London club to a Europa Conference League title last season.

The Scotsman, who was labelled as a ‘special‘ manager by Mikel Arteta last year, will be looking for a new opportunity once again after leaving the London Stadium.

You have to sympathise with Moyes as he did take the United job at a difficult time and replacing Ferguson was always going to be a near-impossible task.

But he did seem to be in over his head at Old Trafford from minute one and Rio Ferdinand’s recent comments would certainly indicate that was the case.

The legendary defender suggested that United’s players were far from impressed with Moyes’ tactical set-up.

What Ferdinand said about Moyes at Man United

“I think there is a few old wives tales, little white lies,” the United legend told The Overlap last month. “Like he showed me and Nemanja Vidic a video of Phil Jagielka and whoever else. That didn’t happen.

“Do you know what it was? Two moments happened, maybe three. I got on the coach after a tour, I think it was Asia or something, and they were tiring. I remember getting on the plane and the manager was pulled out on the chair and looked dishevelled. Big club this isn’t it? That’s what he said to me. I thought oh. I said this before but a kit launch at Everton is on the pitch, a kit launch at United is like a worldwide tour. Very different. So he quickly grasped that at the end of this tour, I thought I actually thought you might have known that before.

“We played against Liverpool and Chelsea and I remember in the training sessions we were setting up to stop Hazard and Coutinho. He put a box in the middle of the pitch or in the area they play in, and the players were looking at each other like we don’t set up to stop individuals, we have never done that at United. Even Messi, we didn’t really have a massive plan for him. It was that mindset of you worry about us, not us worry about you.

“Those two games made me think we were setting up with a defeatist mentality rather than a title-winning team last season. It was a very big shift and that was a thing where one of the things where the players were not against him, but it gave the players a question mark about him in their head.”
