Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has caused a stir on social media after being pictured wearing another club’s shirt. The 20-year-old is not part of United’s pre-season tour in the USA after being part of the Argentina squad that retained the Copa America this summer.

Despite establishing himself as a mainstay in the United team last season, he was forced to settle for a peripheral role with Argentina, being restricted to a single start in the group stages. Garnacho may have had limited involvement in Argentina’s triumph but remains one of six United players who have been given extra time off, following the Copa America and Euro 2024.

It means that while United recently lost a pre-season friendly to Arsenal in Los Angeles, Garnacho has been on holiday in Dubai alongside team-mate Facundo Pellistri. The pair have continued getting in shape ahead of the new season but Garnacho has confused fans after sharing a picture of himself wearing an Al-Ittihad shirt.

Taking to his Instagram story, Garnacho shared a snap alongside Pellistri with the caption, “Work done.” Garnacho’s decision to wear an Al-Ittihad strip was unexpected, particularly given that his idol Cristiano Ronadlo plays for rival side Al Nassr.

Garnacho is one of just four United stars that have been deemed not for sale this summer by new stakeholders Ineos but the post still prompted plenty of reaction from United supporters and rival fans on X, with some joking that the Argentine starlet had found his next club.

One user labelled Al-Ittihad as “his next destination” while another suggested, “He’ll be joining them in January.” A third suggested Garnacho’s choice of shirt could irk Ronaldo, asking: “Why not Al Nassr’s jersey to support his idol????”

Al-Ittihad were one of the big spenders in the Saudi Pro League last summer, recruiting several star names, including Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and Fabinho. Having recently appointed ex-United defender Laurent Blanc as manager, the club have since signed Houssem Aouar from Roma and sealed a move for Aston Villa’s Moussa Diaby.

This led one Al-Ittihad fan to reply: “Your boy wants to come to my team trying to get the bag” and a second Al-Ittihad supporter to imagine Garnacho being part of a dream lineup: “Join Benzema, Diaby and Kante.” Meanwhile, another X user simply complimented the forward on his fashion choice: “Looks good on him though.”

Garnacho started every league game for United from the start of November until the end of last season, registering 15 goal contributions across all competitions. The 20-year-old will be eager to improve on that tally next season and is due to link back up with his teammates when United return from the USA in early August. The FA Cup winners will play Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 10.
