André Onana Mad a Laughing Stock by Forma Man Utd Player After a Disgraceful Europa League Quarter-Final Display
Manchester United played Lyon away in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie tonight. Lyon opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a freekick from Almada. The United shot stopper completely misjudged the flight of the ball and was embarrassingly beaten in goal.
On the bright side, Leny Yoro scored his first goal for United on the night to level things up just on the stroke of half time, and United returned in the second half taking the game to Lyon. Their efforts were rewarded in the 88th minute when a sublime goal was worked between Mainoo, Bruno and Joshua Zirkzee, with the striker adding a silky finish to what was one of the best moves of the game.
Just when United thought they would have a crucial advantage to take back to Old Trafford, André Onana made another humiliating error in goal, parrying an effort from Mikautadze straight into the path of Cherki, who accepted the gift emphatically.
This all comes after a heated exchange of words between André Onana and former United player, Nemanja Matic, who said in no unclear terms, that André Onana was the worst goalkeeper in Manchester United’s history. Matic currently plays for Lyon. Onana’s errors tonight gifted the French team two goals, and his side will have it all to do in the second leg next week if they are to progress to the semi-finals.
Manchester United were denied a crucial away win in their Europa League quarter-final first leg after a last-gasp equaliser from Lyon’s Rayan Cherki secured a 2–2 draw at Groupama Stadium. The Red Devils led twice but were pegged back both times, leaving the tie wide open ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford.
The match began with a flurry of chances from both sides, and Lyon struck first through a composed finish from Rayan Cherki, who proved to be a constant threat all evening. United responded just before the break, with young defender Leny Yoro rising highest to head home Bruno Fernandes’ free kick.
The second half remained evenly contested, but it was United who thought they’d snatched victory in the dying minutes. Bruno Fernandes delivered another pinpoint cross, this time finding substitute Joshua Zirkzee, who powered a header into the top corner to make it 2–1.
However, United’s inability to manage the closing stages of the match cost them dearly. In stoppage time, Andre Onana made a save to deny Mikautadze, but the rebound fell kindly to Cherki, who slotted home his second of the night, securing a dramatic 2–2 result.
Five Manchester United Figures Responsible for the Draw
1. Andre Onana
While he made several important saves during the match, including a stop just moments before the equaliser, Onana failed to control his area effectively in key moments. His parried save in the 95th minute set up the rebound for Cherki to level the game.
2. Harry Maguire
Maguire committed multiple fouls and was eventually substituted after a shaky performance. He struggled to handle Lyon’s movement and pace, particularly from Cherki and Mikautadze, and conceded unnecessary set-pieces that kept the pressure on.
3. Manuel Ugarte
Ugarte’s rash tackles and poor decision-making in midfield disrupted United’s rhythm. He conceded multiple fouls, picked up a yellow card, and was eventually replaced in the 72nd minute after offering little stability in the middle.
4. Mason Mount
Brought on as a substitute, Mount failed to make an impact in midfield. He was booked shortly after coming on and offered little in terms of control or creativity in the closing stages when United needed to manage the game.
5. Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo’s late yellow card came during a nervy finish and added to United’s inability to keep calm under pressure. He struggled to provide the composure and defensive cover required in those final minutes.
