Rasmus Hojlund gave United an early lead

Manchester United are drawing 2-2 against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League at half-time.

United bounced back after successive defeats against Manchester City and Newcastle to claim an important victory against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday, despite the performance being unconvincing again.

Bruno Fernandes’ late goal earned the victory at Craven Cottage and United are now hoping for consecutive wins against Copenhagen, who only narrowly lost in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford.

Copenhagen have just one point in the Champions League group but confidence in their camp was high for this game, but they fell behind in the opening minutes tonight after a brilliant goal from United.

Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring after a superb move and he scored another in the 26th minute to extend the advantage.

United were comfortable and looked the better side, but Marcus Rashford received a red card before half-time and Copenhagen were able to level the game before the break, scoring twice.

United player ratings as Hojlund good and Varane poor

Andre Onana

Could not repeat his penalty heroics from a fortnight ago as Copenhagen scored twice in quick succession. Could have done better for the third goal. 5

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Played a terrific reverse pass for the opening goal and his partnership with Marcus Rashford was promising until the red card. 8

Harry Maguire

Started alongside Jonny Evans but played most of the first half with the rusty Raphael Varane. They both handled in quick succession to give Copenhagen a penalty but Maguire won a penalty. 6

FT – FCK 4-3 MUNKEY EVENT

FULL-TIME!

Heartbreak for United at the Parken Stadium, as Copenhagen score twice in the final 10 minutes to win. The red card changed the game and that’s a painful defeat.

Hopes of progressing from the group are slim now.

90′ – FCK 4-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Five minutes added

United have been stunned at Parken.

87′ – FCK 4-3 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 4-3 COPENHAGEN! (Bardghji)

Wow, Copenhagen have scored again and that’s surely the winner.

Their crosses caused carnage and that was a strike into the roof of the net.

86′ – FCK 3-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Copenhagen pushing for a winner

It’s been all Copenhagen since that equalising goal and United are under the cosh.

This is going to be a cagey final few minutes of the game.

84′ – FCK 3-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Hojlund comes off

Mount ON.

Hojlund OFF.

82′ – FCK 3-3 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 3-3 COPENHAGEN! (Lerager)

Copenhagen score at the back post and that was terrible defending from Dalot.

He switched off and left his man unmarked – then it was too late.

79′ – FCK 2-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

10 minutes remaining

Just 10 minutes remaining at Parken – can they see this result out?

78′ – FCK 2-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

United defending well

Wan-Bissaka has been outstanding tonight and the team are defending really well. This would be the most significant win of the season and United just made a great chance to make it 4-2.

75′ – FCK 2-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

This would be a huge win

Bayern are beating Galatasaray in Munich and this would be a huge win for United, whose hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds will receive a huge boost if the result stays the same.

71′ – FCK 2-3 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Fernandes does it again

The tired narrative around who should captain United emerged again after the Manchester derby, but there’s only one logical candidate to wear the armband in that dressing room and it’s Fernandes. He delivered with a late goal against Fulham at the weekend and he’s done it again tonight. No ‘keeper in the world would have saved his penalty.

68′ – FCK 2-3 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 3-2 UNITED! (Fernandes)

Fernandes converts from the spot under immense pressure to restore the lead.

That is a huge moment and what a bloody penalty it was.

67′ – FCK 2-2 MUNKEY EVENT

UNITED PENALTY

United have been awarded the penalty after the check from VAR.

What a genuinely bonkers game this has been.

66′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

VAR checking

Maguire won a header from a free-kick and the ball struck the Copenhagen player’s arm.

VAR is checking and it should be given as a penalty.

65′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Hojlund hurt

Hojlund took a hit to the face by a trailing arm and Copenhagen got away with it.

63′ – FCK 2-2 MUNRICHARD FAY

United need to keep it right

Copenhagen are putting more pressure on but United are holding well at the moment and are taking the sting out of this game. Their best football has been on the counter-attack today, so if they can keep it tight at the back then you’d expect them to get some chances at the other end as well.

60′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Copenhagen increasing pressure

Copenhagen are adding pressure and Maguire has just made a brilliant block in the box. They’ve taken a while to assert, but the hosts are playing how a team with an extra man should now.

57′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

United have done well

United deserve credit here because they’ve fared well despite the sending-off. They’re enjoying more of the ball than you might expect and they just need to maintain concentration.

54′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Chances at both ends

There have been chances at both ends in the last few minutes and the game is looking stretched. Dalot just worked an opening but it came to nothing. Copenhagen seem to have taken their foot off the gas since half-time, which is bizarre considering they have an extra man on the pitch.

51′ – FCK 2-2 MUNRICHARD FAY

This is promising

This has been a good start to the second-half from United. It is about not losing the match rather than trying to win it at this stage. This is what they should have done when they went down to 10-men.

48′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

United can still win this

United were impressive on the counter-attack in the first half and they have the pace, with Hojlund and Garnacho, to hurt Copenhagen when they break, despite having a man sent off.

45′ – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Back under way

We’re back under way for the second half at Parken.

Amrabat has replaced Eriksen.

HT – FCK 2-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

HALF-TIME!

That’s the whistle for the break here.

United were leading thanks to a brace from Hojlund, but Rashford was sent off and Copenhagen scored twice before half-time, which is going to make the second half difficult.

45+9′ – FCK 2-2 MUNRICHARD FAY

Huge challenge ahead

Ah, it was all going so well too. The red card was harsh but there can’t be any complaints about the penalty. This is a huge challenge for United now.

45+8′ – FCK 2-2 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 2-2 COPENHAGEN! (Goncalves)

Copenhagen covert the penalty, as the ball is tapped into the bottom left corner.

Onana went the wrong way and that is brutal for United.

45+6′ – FCK 1-2 MUNKEY EVENT

COPENHAGEN PENALTY

Wow, Copenhagen have been given a penalty for a Maguire handball.

45+3′ – FCK 1-2 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Eriksen will be replaced

Amrabat for Eriksen is inevitable. Ten Hag will be reluctant a player who can offer a measure of control for someone who does not, but it is going to happen at some point.

United’s 4-4-1 shape is otherwise fine, as Fernandes will graft on the right. Garnacho will likely come off at some stage as well and Pellistri’s energy could be key.

45′ – FCK 1-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

13 minutes added

That’s a hefty amount of stoppage time before the break due to the crowd incident.

45′ – FCK 1-2 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

It’s never simple with United

This is somewhat in keeping with United this season. There always has to be some drama and they needed half-time to come as soon as possible. They had the warning with the free-kick but they have not adjusted quickly enough. This is going to be a slugfest now, unless they can summon the game management and decisiveness in the final third with a man fewer.

VAR needs binning and another reason for it is the abysmal communication. The big screen said ‘check over’ and then the referee headed over to the monitor. Hardly anyone in the stadium will know or have seen the severity of Rashford’s challenge and that goes against the essence of the game.

44′ – FCK 1-2 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 2-1 COPENHAGEN! (Elynoussi)

Copenhagen have one back on the stroke of half-time.

United left a player unmarked at the back post, it was played back into the area and Varane couldn’t get close to Elynoussi, who slotted home from around six yards.

42′ – FCK 0-2 MUNRICHARD FAY

That will divide opinion

That red card will divide opinion. There didn’t appear to be any malice in it, but it was a dreadful challenge and always ran the risk of being punished. This will be a huge test of United’s mentality to hold on now.

(Image: Maja Hitij/Getty Images)

41′ – FCK 0-2 MUNKEY EVENT

RED CARD

Rashford has been sent off after the VAR check and he can’t quite believe that decision.

40′ – FCK 0-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

VAR checking incident

Rashford could be sent off here after making a high challenge on an opponent’s ankle.

It’s a clumsy challenge and he’s likely to be sent off.

39′ – FCK 0-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

CHANCE!

United have looked menacing on the counter-attack throughout this game and Hojlund has just broke forward with his pace, but he can’t produce the finish at the end of the move.

37′ – FCK 0-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Copenhagen yet to threaten

Copenhagen haven’t created a big chance yet. Wan-Bissaka has been brilliant down that right side and he’s roaming up and down the line. He’s been superb since his return from injury.

33′ – FCK 0-2 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

This is more like it

United’s most convincing performance of the season was the 3-0 win against Crystal Palace until tonight. They have been excellent so far we haven’t said that often this term.

30′ – FCK 0-2 MUNRICHARD FAY

Another swift counter-attack goal

United are at their best when they play on the counter-attack, and there is no shame in that. There is an obvious desire to try and control games more, but they should embrace the fact that they can cause any team problems as a counter-attacking team. That was a brilliant second goal.

28′ – FCK 0-2 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Copenhagen seem stunned

This has been a superb performance from United, who have played arrogantly and the scoreline is reflective of the gap between a Premier League and a Danish league side.

Garnacho should have scored but Hojlund lurked on the off-chance he would get a chance. He did.

Copenhagen seem stunned. This is a very different United from the first half two weeks ago and Copenhagen have possibly believed their own hype. The atmosphere has quietened.

26′ – FCK 0-2 MUNKEY EVENT

GOAL! 2-0 UNITED! (Hojlund)

United break forward and Hojlund scores another on the counter-attack – great goal.

Garnacho’s shot was saved, but the goalkeeper could only turn the ball into Hojlund’s path and it’s another tap in for the striker at his old stomping ground in Denmark.

23′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Copenhagen counter-attack

The hosts have just attempted to break forward, but they were slow moving the ball and United got back in numbers. Copenhagen haven’t been as good as they were in the first leg, although as I just typed that, they played a dangerous ball into the box, which Onana had to claim.

20′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Superb pass from Fernandes

Fernandes has just found Garnacho on the left with a beautiful cross-field pass and he’s having a good game so far. His passing has been sharp and the midfield has control.

18′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

A short stoppage here

As Samuel mentioned in the previous post, there is a stoppage in play here because a member of the crowd appears to be receiving some urgent medical attention.

16′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Another injury in the squad

United have to consider changing the fitness staff at the club. Players have dropped like flies all season and much of it has been avoidable. Muscular injuries are always viewed as avoidable and United have had a plethora of them.

On the far side, stewards are holding up a sheet, seemingly to cover what medical procedures are being carried out. It is particularly eerie, given Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on this ground during Euro 2020. We can only hope whoever needs attention is receiving it.

(Image: Catherine Ivill/Getty Images.)

13′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Evans comes off

Evans has picked up an injury and he’s been replaced by Varane.

That’s a shame for the centre-back but it’s not a bad replacement.

10′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Really positive 10 minutes

United have managed this game really well so far. It’s still early doors but they have been completely at ease and the Parken, while atmospheric, is not intimidating. Sevilla was louder in April.

What’s also reassuring about United is how often the players are communicating. It’s not backbiting but constructive conflabs. Ten hag has been clapping approvingly.

8′ – FCK 0-1 MUNSTEVEN RAILSTON

Ten Hag will be delighted

United have made the perfect start to the game and Ten Hag will be delighted. Copenhagen’s players and their manager were in a confident mood in the build-up to this match, but actions are louder than words and they’re behind. Hojlund also scored against his former club.

6′ – FCK 0-1 MUNRICHARD FAY

Fantastic start

So THAT’S how Ten Hag wants his team to play. What a fabulous move and a fantastic start to the game. There is a lot of work to be done, but when they click, this team is capable of some superb football.

4’ – FCK 0-1 MUNSAMUEL LUCKHURST

That was a brilliant goal

That is superb from United. They took the sting out of the game and as soon as the gaps appeared, they took their chances. Everyone hit their cues and it’s one of those goals where one has to marvel more at the structure of the goal than the defending. That was a goal from a team with an identity.
