A horror moment for Manchester United veteran Jonny Evans gifted the Community Shield to Manchester City after a penalty shoot-out.

Evans lifted his spot-kick over the crossbar before Manuel Akanji tucked in the winning penalty as Pep Guardiola’s side secured the first silverware of the season.
Alejandro Garnacho thought he had inflicted more Wembley misery on the four-time Premier League winners when he repeated his FA Cup final goalscoring heroics from just 77 days earlier with nine minutes remaining. But another substitute Bernardo Silva, headed a last-minute equaliser for City to make it 1-1 and take the match to spot-kicks.
Andre Onana saved from Silva early in the shoot-out but Jadon Sancho, back for Man Utd following his bust-up with Erik Ten Hag, saw his kept out by Ederson.
Evans then blazed United’s eighth penalty high over the top before Akanji secured a 7-6 win for City.

Bernardo Silva rescues City before shootout win to end Community Shield curse
Manchester City snatched the Community Shield from the grasp of rivals Manchester United after a late equaliser and penalty shootout win at Wembley.
Alejandro Garnacho thought he won Saturday’s curtain-raiser with an 82nd-minute opener for United, only for Bernardo Silva to head home an even-later leveller.
That meant penalties and City overcame Silva’s opening effort being saved by Andre Onana with seven consecutive successes, which were enough to win them the trophy after misses by Jonny Evans and Jadon Sancho.

“I let the others shoot first, when you miss your last [penalty] you don’t go with too much confidence for the next one.
“I had confidence, I said in training I’d shoot down the middle.
“It wasn’t easy. We played well, United got better before 1-0 but we stayed in the game. A great cross by OScar and Bernardo’s header.
“I know what it’s like to miss, it has to be someone.
“It’s a great start to the season, I hadn’t won this trophy yet. I’m really happy.”
