Disappointment for United as Unwanted Player ‘Likely to Remain’ at Old Trafford This Season – Report

Victor Lindelof Expected to Stay at Manchester United Despite Transfer Speculation

Manchester United’s center-back Victor Lindelof is expected to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming season, despite the club’s active efforts to offload him this summer. Lindelof, 30, has 12 months remaining on his contract after Manchester United triggered a one-year extension last Christmas. This extension was strategically implemented to preserve the defender’s market value amid ongoing transfer negotiations.

The summer transfer window has seen United prioritize a defensive overhaul following a season marred by injuries. The club has bolstered their backline with new signings, including central defenders Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, and fullback Noussair Mazraoui. With these additions, Lisandro Martinez is expected to continue as the first-choice left center-back, alongside either De Ligt or Yoro, depending on Yoro’s recovery from injury.

Harry Maguire, another player who faced speculation about his future, looks set to stay after a strong resurgence last season. Veteran Jonny Evans will continue in a mentor role after securing a one-year extension. The departures of Raphael Varane, who joined Como on a free transfer, and Willy Kambwala, sold to Villarreal for £9.6 million, have left Lindelof as the fifth-choice center-back.

Although Lindelof was linked with moves to Eintracht Frankfurt and Fiorentina, his current situation complicates potential transfers. He has been sidelined with an injury since the friendly against Liverpool in South Carolina, and recent reports suggest he is still struggling with the issue, as evidenced by him using crutches last week.

Given these circumstances, coupled with the challenges of moving a player over 30 with a year left on his contract, it is becoming increasingly likely that Lindelof will stay with United this season. The club’s hopes of selling him to fund other transfers, particularly in midfield with ongoing interest in PSG’s Manuel Ugarte, now seem less feasible.
