Erik ten Hag changes his mind about ‘perfect’ Man Utd star after on-field battle

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has paid tribute to young midfielder Hannibal Mejbri following his performance in the 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday night.

Erik ten Hag has praised Hannibal Mejbri after the youngster impressed in Manchester United’s narrow win over Burnley.

Mejbri, 20, was heavily linked with a move during the summer transfer window but decided to stay and fight for a first-team place after talks with Ten Hag. The Tunisia international made a big impression in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton, scoring after coming off the bench and being rewarded with a start against Burnley.

With injuries now starting to take their toll, Ten Hag deployed Mejbri as number 10 for the 1-0 win at Turf Moor, thanks to a phenomenal Bruno Fernandes volley. And the Dutchman was impressed by what he saw from the former Monegasque youngster. Ten Hag told TNT Sports after the game: “Of course it’s a concern. You have so many injuries that you have problems in the routine of your game.

“You bring players, they are new – like Reguilon, like Hojlund and you can’t slowly insert them into your team’s routine. They are not used to playing together, like Annibale who did it perfectly.”

Mejbri will be hoping for further first-team opportunities after impressing against Brighton and Burnley. He has been the subject of strong transfer interest from Sevilla and Turkish clubs, but he has always been keen to continue playing at Old Trafford. It appears Mejbri could be kicked out of the club in the summer of 2022 after an altercation with Alex Telles on the training ground. Again this summer there were suggestions that Ten Hag could try to move Mejbri forward; just as he did with Telles, who joined Al-Nassr.

But all signs now point to Mejbri remaining in and around Ten Hag’s squad – particularly after his glowing comments following Saturday night’s crucial victory at Turf Moor.
