Holland international Zirkzee joined United from Bologna for £36.5million, with the 23-year-old currently on holiday after his involvement at Euro 2024. United opted not to trigger his £34.5m release clause, instead paying an additional £2m to spread the cost of the deal over three years.
Ten Hag believes Zirkzee will bring different qualities to United’s attack and offer an alternative style to the type of forward they already have within the squad.
“He’s player who can link up the game, who can be available, hold up the ball, have good ideas, be creative and who can dribble in combinations,” said Ten Hag. “So that’s a different type [of player] and always what we are looking for, so it gives us more options tactically, which is good.
“Particularly up front, we have many players who can play very direct, so they can take a big benefit for his skills.”

Speaking after United opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Norwegian side Rosenborg in Trondheim, the United boss also insisted his side can compete with the best teams in the world – but need the squad to be bolstered to stand any chance of competing for the Premier League or to get back into the top four.

“I think we showed we can beat the best team in the world on the last occasion of the season,” said Ten Hag, reflecting on United’s epic FA Cup triumph over City. “So when everyone is fit, we already have a good team and can achieve a high level. But also, we know in terms of the depth, we need more players.
“Especially this season – again, more games, the new model, the new format of Europe – you’ll have more games in a season, more intense games. No winter break and a January that’s very condensed. So you need squad depth. Then it’s more and more about the survival of the fittest.”
