The fog surrounding Erik ten Hag’s uncertain Manchester United future will lift this week.
At the end of an arduous season littered with woeful displays, Ten Hag delivered the Red Devils’ worst league finish in 30 years. By his own admission, it was “cr*p”, and his job was under jeopardy as reports claimed new minority owners INEOS would axe him in the summer.
Yet despite the overwhelming odds, he delivered one final twist in the tale by clinching an FA Cup final victory over neighbours Manchester City on Saturday, trumping Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions 2-1. Sealing a second trophy in as many years may prove to be his last act as United manager, though the triumph undoubtedly earned the sympathy of many Red Devils supporters.

With the United hierarchy reaching a decision over his future this week, Mirror Sport will now break down Ten Hag’s eventful past few days, including his furious rant, a thinly-veiled message to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and what’s happening behind-the-scenes at the club.

Pre-Wembley fury
As the final day of United’s dismal campaign arrived, few gave Ten Hag’s side any chance of beating recently-crowned champions City. The manager, seemingly having had enough of the barrage of criticism thrown at him over the course of the season, sought to add perspective and manage external expectations.
Speaking to Dutch outlet VI, the 54-year-old broke into a furious rant ahead of trip to Wembley. He took aim at pundits by claiming they “have no sense of reality” as “other clubs had a much better squad” this season.
“Manchester United won the league for the last time in 2013, 11 years ago,” the manager said. “But still they expect us to win every game while competing at the top. This club is not ready for that.
“We were supposed to start building something and we made the first steps last year, but then you find out how big this club is and that nobody is ever satisfied. Within the club people were satisfied, but outside the club there was noise by saying I won only the Carabao Cup, lost the FA Cup Final and came third.”
He added: “When things go bad they all start talking and talking with very big words. All this negativity from these so called experts who don’t have the capability to analyse something with facts, but who prefer to attack people to make themselves look better.
“And these same people were the ones who gave me a pat on the back last year. Last year I was able to walk on water, this year I am the worst manager in the Premier League.”
Threat to the board

The Guardian reported last Friday that Ratcliffe had already decided to replace Ten Hag, no matter the outcome of the final. Sky Sports claimed former Red Devils coach Kieran McKenna’s representatives had held talks with the Old Trafford hierarchy following the Northern Irishman’s back-to-back promotions with Ipswich Town.
Others linked with the role were Brentford’s Thomas Frank, recently departed Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel. That led Gary Lineker to brutally quiz Ten Hag about the latest reports surrounding his future just moments after lifting the FA Cup on live TV.
He didn’t hold back with his no nonsense answer, stunning viewers by threatening to leave and achieve success elsewhere if United dismissed him. “I don’t know,” he said. “The only thing I’m doing is preparing my team, developing my team. This is a project for me.
“When I came in I can say it was a mess. Now we are better. We are not where we want to be. If they don’t want me any more, I’ll go somewhere else and win trophies,” he said. “That’s what I’ve done my whole career.”
Decision time

A season review will be held this week to finally determine the beleaguered Dutchman’s fate. The Athletic report that senior United figures, including Ratcliffe and Ineos’ sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford, will undertake a post-mortem on the season to consider whether a change in management is needed.
Ten Hag’s staff at Carrington have already been told to pack up their workspaces, according to The Telegraph – but that is only due to plans to refurbish the training ground with major upgrades being implemented over the summer.
Cristiano Ronaldo famously slammed United’s training headquarters in a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan in late 2022. Keen to cause a storm before jetting off to the Middle-East, Ronaldo jibed that the club had “stopped in time”, calling out its facilities, including the pool, jacuzzi, gym, kitchen and even the chefs, who he conceded were “lovely people”.
United’s players arrive back at Carrington ahead of their pre-season tour to the USA in mid-July, despite work set to be undertaken on the main building. Whether Ten Hag and his team return with them remains to be seen.
