MANCHESTER UNITED have taken the lead against Fenerbahce – and what a strike it was!

Fans criticised Erik ten Hag for putting Mazraoui in the number ten role prior to the match.

But it was Moroccan’s tidy flick that led to Christian Eriksen’s thunderbolt.

Fenerbahce are still very dangerous when they break down the wings with Muldur and Osayi-Samuel.

Man Utd are still holding, but not comfortably.

It looks as though Manchester United might make ‘hell’ freeze over here in Istanbul.

Despite a fiery reception from Fenerbahce fans and a positive start from Jose Mourinho’s side, United lead through a classic counter-attack and a thumping finish from Christian Eriksen – even Erik ten Hag’s ‘false ten’ Noussair Mazaroui played his part.

Of course you expected Fenerbahce boss Mourinho to complain about a handball after Ugarte’s incredible block to deny Tadic a certain goal…

Thought I didn’t even have to post about it, but there it goes!

Man Utd are leaving so much empty space at the back.

Martinez’s inability to play at left-back is obvious and Fenerbahce boss Mourinho sees it.

Most of Fener’s attacks are taking place down the left!

What a chance!

And what a block! Fenerbahce miss a glorious chance to equalise!

Fred releases Szymanski down the left and his effort is deflected by Onana.

But the ball reaches Tadic who is in front of open goal and tries a shot that is blocked by Ugarte’s body in the nick of time!

Perfectly-time block, the midfielder saved a certain goal!

What a chance!

Man Utd come inches away from a second in only their second attack of the match.

Rashford breaks inside the Fenerbahce area from the right and fires a beautiful curling shot that just misses Livakovic’s bottom right corner.

Man Utd break the deadlock in Istanbul after a brilliant attack.

Garnacho drives the ball down the left and delivers a low cross inside the penalty area where Mazraoui tips it to Zirkzee who passes backwards to the incoming Eriksen.

The Denmark international fires a powerful shot and beats Livakovic to issue a major blow early on to his former manager at Tottenham!

Mourinho is very much ready for this big Europa League match between his Fenerbahce side and former club Man Utd.

Mourinho joked before the match that he’s expecting a Premier League winners’ medal after leading United to second place in 2018 amid Manchester City’s FFP troubles.

The Special One also suggested his Red Devils counterpart Ten Hag is receiving a lot more trust than what he got…

5 Fenerbahce 0-0 Man Utd

This is a very interesting Europa League match.

Not just because of Mourinho facing his former club, not just because Man Utd are clashing against former players Fred as well as Amrabat and not just because of all the ex-Premier League players.

But also because right-back Mazraoui is playing at No10! The Morocco international played that position under Ten Hag at Ajax and thus captain Martinez occupies the left-back position.

Amrabat opens up on United exit

Sofyan Amrabat has revealed that Erik ten Hag wanted to keep him at Manchester United – but the Old Trafford hierarchy had other ideas.

The midfielder also sent a cryptic message to club chief Jason Wilcox ahead of United’s visit to Fenerbahce in the Europa League tonight.

Amrabat spent last season on loan at Old Trafford from Fiorentina and racked up 30 appearances across all competitions.

He impressed towards the end of the campaign, producing an excellent performance in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

But that was the last time he would wear the United shirt.

On his exit, he told The Mail: “I have a special relationship with Ten Hag since I was a 20-year-old at Utrecht.

“He wanted to keep me this summer so I wish him the best but not for Thursday. I hope they lose.”

The Morocco international was then asked if he’d like to share anything else about his departure.

To which he cryptically responded: “The only thing that I want to say is that you have to ask Mr Wilcox.”

Wilcox, 53, is the technical director at Carrington who has overall responsibility for “football performance, recruitment and operations”.

Ten Hag wanted to activate the option to permanently buy Amrabat for £21m but the United echelons thought otherwise, opting to go for Manuel Ugarte from PSG for £51m instead.

Mourinho on United

When asked whether he thought Man Utd has changed since his tenure, he said: “Honestly, I didn’t lose one minute thinking about it.

“I wish the best to Man United since the moment I left. I left with a good feeling to the club, with a good feeling to the fans and I want the best for them.

“So if things are not going amazingly well for them it’s not something that makes me happy.

“But at the same time, I have no time, and it doesn’t make sense for me, to be thinking about what happened, what didn’t happen.

“What happened, for sure, because it’s very objective, is that they keep faith in the coach [Ten Hag], they support the coach, the coach is staying season after season and that means stability, it means trust. They are giving him conditions to keep developing his job.

“That was different in relation to me because we won Europa League, we finished second in the Premier League.

“I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points and they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal.”

Ten Hag’s tactical tweak

Erik ten Hag has made a shock tactical tweak in this huge Europa League match.

Mazraoui is playing in the NUMBER TEN role instead of full-back.

And its safe to say fans are not happy.
