Again it was down to a well-worked corner, with Jenna Clark getting the crucial touch from a teasing Höbinger ball towards the far post at the end of the first half.

Liverpool work it back into the box as United’s defence goes to sleep, with Koivisto popping out of nowhere to get on the end of a bouncing ball … she heads on to the post and can’t react quick enough for the rebound, sending it wide.

Manchester United 1-2 Liverpool
Liverpool fought back from conceding an early goal to earn a surprise win over Manchester United, the women’s side’s first-ever win over their rivals. Ella Toone slotted home in just the third minute, before Melvine Malard fired into the side netting with the goal at her mercy moments later.
The hosts were punished for not taking more of their chances in the 33rd minute, as Melissa Lawley’s fine cross from the right was headed into her own goal by Millie Turner, under pressure from Emma Koivisto. Turner made amends in the second half, blocking Ceri Holland’s shot, but Liverpool did go ahead in the 68th minute.
From a corner, substitute Shanice van de Sanden’s delivery caused chaos in the United defence and the Liverpool captain, Taylor Hinds, hooked the ball home. After a lengthy stoppage for a head injury to Gemma Bonner, who was helped off the pitch, Katie Zelem went closest to a leveller with a fierce shot, parried away by Teagan Micah.

Marc Skinner is next to talk, and he offers a scathing assessment of his United side’s performance. “We lost on the fundamentals. Liverpool are not nice to play against, and we didn’t match that – we were too passive in the final third.
“You can play all the pretty football you want, you need to win headers. It’s not good enough. We can’t blame fatigue. It’s desire to win the ball, to go and compete. We can’t be beaten like that. When they come back from the break, they had better be fired up.”
Post-game thoughts from Taylor Hinds: “It feels amazing, this game is another derby for us. You can see how happy our fans are, which means everything to us. We’ve put [the 6-0 defeat last season] way behind us – you can see we’ve added a lot to this team.
On the goal, she says: “Normally I’m on the edge of the box, but I had a feeling I would score today!” On Gemma Bonner’s injury, she adds: “I haven’t heard anything, the fact she walked off the pitch … hopefully she’ll be alright. She’s a tough girl.”

It was tight but Liverpool just about deserved the victory in the end. United were a long way from their best, especially considering they took the lead so early on but Liverpool recovered after their slow start.
Manchester United Women travel to rivals Liverpool on Sunday afternoon for our penultimate game of the 2023/24 WSL season.
A positive result at Prenton Park could be vital as both sides are level on 35 points in the WSL, with United currently fourth ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool on goal difference.
Marc Skinner’s side are unbeaten in our last four matches following last weekend’s 1-0 victory at Leicester. Ella Toone’s wonder strike in the closing stages proved to be the difference at the King Power Stadium.

Although tickets have sold out for our visit to Prenton Park, you can still secure your seat for United’s final game of the season against Chelsea at Old Trafford, on Saturday 18 May.

WHAT’S THE TEAM NEWS?
Skinner revealed in his press conference prior to the Leicester game last week that full-back Jayde Riviere could be available to face Liverpool.
The Canada international has missed our last four matches after picking up an injury during the Manchester derby in March.
The boss said: “Jayde Riviere is back training individually. So she’s back on the field and training. Hopefully, we can get her back in next week to be in contention for the Liverpool game.”
For the home side, goalkeeper Rachael Laws and forward Shanice van de Sanden are both expected to miss the rest of the season through injury.
Club captain Niamh Fahey is a doubt for Sunday after suffering a setback in training following a calf problem, while defender Jasmine Matthews recently recovered from a hamstring issue.
United may be boosted by the return of Riviere on Sunday.
THE OPPOSITION
Liverpool were involved in a seven-goal thriller on Wednesday, as they edged out Chelsea 4-3 on home soil. Defender Gemma Bonner scored two of her side’s goals, including an injury-time winner.
Our opponents this weekend have won six of their last 10 matches across all competitions, with two draws and two defeats during that period.
The Merseysiders can be proud of their achievements this season, which is only their second year back in the WSL, after winning promotion to the top flight in 2022.
As previously mentioned, they are battling United for fourth spot in the league table, and they reached the Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals before exiting at the hands of Leicester.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS
In the reverse league fixture at Leigh Sports Village in December, Toone’s early strike put United ahead before the visitors mounted a comeback to win 2-1.
However, the Reds do have a victory to our name over Matt Beard’s side this campaign, as Nikita Parris netted the only goal in a Continental Tyres League Cup tie in November.
United will be looking to keep up our strong record on our travels against Liverpool, having won three of our four previous trips to Prenton Park, all by a 1-0 scoreline.
One of the standout fixtures between the two sides is our 6-0 home triumph in the WSL last season, which included goals from Lucia Garcia, Hayley Ladd and Rachel Williams.
