Manchester United are set to push forward with plans to sign two midfield reinforcements this summer, according to sources, with Wolverhampton Wanderers star Joao Gomes still among those on their engine room shortlist.
The 20-time English champions may have concluded their domestic season with their worst-ever finish of the Premier League era, but winning the FA Cup final 2-1 against their arch-rivals Manchester City was a silver lining in an otherwise hodgepodge campaign.
What the club get up to in the summer transfer window could determine how they fare in 2024/24, especially with Erik ten Hag’s future in doubt.
The Dutchman, despite winning silverware in back-to-back seasons, finds himself subject to an internal review and there can be a new man in his role come August.

A key area that is in major need of a reshuffle is the middle of the park. The respective futures of Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat are hanging in the balance and Christian Eriksen’s age proved costly in 2023/24, meaning Kobbie Mainoo is in need of a midfield partner.
According to reports Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS-led regime are looking to acquire two midfielders this summer. In his first season at the club, the 71-year-old minority stakeholder is looking to stamp his authority on the English top flight by adding to their roster. Finding a midfielder to star alongside a world-beating Mainoo will be at the top of their priority list.
In March, reports suggested that the Red Devils were ‘weighing up’ a move for Wolves’ 23-year-old and GMS sources have confirmed the Old Trafford side’s previous interest but insisted they are yet to follow up on their early admiration.

At a time when Manchester United are keen to ‘find some value’, Gomes, who is ‘going to the top’ according to Micah Richards, has emerged as one of the standout options (from the current crop the Premier League have an offer) that they could yet attempt to snare before the transfer window slams firmly shut.

FIRST SIGNING ON THE WAY: Manchester United submits firt bid for €60m Real Madrid transfer target
Manchester United have reportedly made an opening transfer bid for Lille centre-back Leny Yoro, who is also a target for Real Madrid this summer.
It seems Real Madrid have yet to open any negotiations or make any concrete moves for Yoro, despite him being on their radar for some time, and Man Utd may now be trying to steal a march on their rivals by making a bid to Lille, according to Marca.
Yoro is widely regarded as one of the most talented young players in world football and surely has a big future in the game, with the Red Devils also definitely in need of injecting some top young talent into their back line at the moment.
United have ageing players like Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans in that position, while Raphael Varane has just left the club at the end of his contract.
Yoro could therefore be ideal as the long-term defensive partner to Lisandro Martinez, whom United will hope can stay injury-free next year after a difficult 2023/24 campaign.
Matteo Moretto has previously reported, his column for the Daily Briefing: “There’s Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League clubs interested that Real Madrid have as competition, and they don’t want to spend big money on Leny Yoro. At a ‘reasonable’ price they’d be happy to do business, but the truth is that Real Madrid likely to offer less than €40m for Yoro.
“No doubt Lille are asking a lot (€60m, as per multiple reports from others), but the economic side of the deal remains important for Real Madrid. They are not going to throw money out the window for a boy that, as brilliant as he is, and even if Real Madrid are his priority, is out of contract in 2025. So it could be tricky.”
Could it be that Real’s reluctance to pay big money for Yoro will now play to United’s advantage?

David Ornstein of The Athletic has given a hint on which club Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise may end up signing for and it’s not good news for Manchester United.
Olise is believed to be a prime target for United ahead of the summer transfer window.
In the 2023/24 season, the winger plundered 10 goals and six assists in 19 Premier League appearances – an impressive return considering just how much his campaign was ravaged by injuries.
United are thought to be the frontrunners to secure Olise’s services as the Frenchman is a boyhood fan of the club. However, Chelsea are also pursuing him and are said to be “bullish” about their chances of landing him after they failed to acquire him last summer.
However, according to Ornstein who spoke on The Athletic FC Podcast, other clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool are also monitoring Olise and could enter the fray for him.
If this happens, it could spell trouble for the Red Devils because according to the journalist, Olise would likely prefer to join a club that can offer him Champions League football.
Ornstein said about the 22-year-old’s future and his transfer situation, “I think this is going to be one of the fascinatng narratives as the market unfolds because there are of course lots of top players and he’s one of them. Not many of them have release clauses but he does. By all accounts, it’s not extortionate – relatively speaking – for the quality of player that he is.”
“The key thing here is that in a market of such uncertainty about valuations and especially leading players, to have a player who has a clause and it’s not ludicrous, brings a little bit of clarity to clubs when they’re looking at their budgets and who they might want to target or not.”
“Olise has admirers across the game and at the very top level. We’ve seen the links to Manchester United, Manchester City maybe, Chelsea went for him last summer and could very well try again. It wouldn’t surprise you if other top clubs like Liverpool – there have been some online rumours about them – and even Arsenal’s name gets thrown into the hat, the likes of Paris Saint-Germain…the biggest clubs in world football.”
“Ornstein added, “That puts Olise in a very strong position because ultimately if and when these offers arrive and if Crystal Palace are compelled to accept by virtue of there being a clause, he’ll have his pick of many of the leading lights in world football. Everything I hear about Olise is that he’s a considerate guy, very intelligent and calm. He really works through these things in his head and he’s not going to jump into rash decisions.”
Maybe he ultimately decides that he wants to stay at Palace…I don’t think there’s a guarantee that he moves, but it’s one that’s being talked about as someone that he could move.”
Ornstein further stated that Olise has the talent to make it all the way to the top, provided he remains fit and injury-free.
“This is somebody that there’s a feeling around that he should be aiming as high as possible. I’ve always been led to believe that Champions League is the step that he would take after leaving Palace. That’s not ruling out a really exciting project and if he holds talks with say United and he really likes what he hears and the numbers are right and it all adds up, then something happens there.”
Ornstein went on ahead to warn that if Champions League clubs are in the frame for him and it’s a stable prospect, then it’s an opportunity he would be inclined to accept.
This is especially because the London-born forward would be leaving something that’s working under Oliver Glasner at Selhurst Park. If so, he’d love to go somewhere where he’d be challenging for the biggest trophies and club honours.
Finally, Ornstein reiterated yet again on the podcast that if he had to guess, Olise would prefer a switch to an outfit already in the Champions League, although nothing is cast in stone.
WEDNESDAY MORNING TRANSFER UPDATE: Manchester United still in the race to sign ‘extremely quick’ striker
WEDNESDAY MORNING TRANSFER UPDATE: Manchester United still in the race to sign ‘extremely quick’ striker
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Manchester United have presented their project to one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.
The Red Devils are expected to be active on the market this summer, but a lot will depend on their managerial and financial situations.
Manchester United could do with reinforcements in multiple areas of their pitch, and many feel they need another striker. Romano has shared the latest on one of their targets.
Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign him for a while now, but most of the noise surrounding his future have been regarding Arsenal and Chelsea’s interest.
It has been claimed that the Blues have even started talks to sign Sesko, while David Ornstein revealed on The Athletic FC podcast that Arsenal are ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign him.
However, Fabrizio Romano has shared a more optimistic update for United supporters.
The journalist has revealed that Sesko has Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea’s projects in front of him right now, and the ‘extremely quick‘ striker is yet to decide on who to pick.
All three clubs are still in the race to sign Sesko, but Leipzig have offered him a new deal as well – one worth big money – to keep hold of him.
Romano said in a video on his YouTube channel: “There is a crucial step to do – it is when Sesko will decide his future. Sesko is taking his time to decide.
“He has a new contract proposal from Leipzig. Leipzig offered him really important money, really important salary, to be the star of the team next season, to change the release clause in his contract. So, a big proposal from Leipzig.
“Now, Sesko has to decide whether he wants to stay at Leipizg and extend his contract or leave and probably go to the Premier League. So, first step has to be this one. Then, which clubs? They all remian in the race, nothing has been decided yet, I can guarantee about that.
“Sesko is still taking his time to decide between Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal. These three clubs are in the race, everything is still open, Sesko has not accepted anything yet. He has all the projects in front of him, so it’s up to Benjamin Sesko basically to decide what he wants to do.”
