Manchester United look to be closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window and he appears to be exactly what Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have been wanting

It appears the battle to bring Jarrad Branthwaite to Manchester United is finally turning in the Reds’ favour after reports on Saturday morning.
Our colleagues at the Liverpool Echo understand there is a growing feeling at Everton that United will complete a deal to bring Branthwaite to Old Trafford. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stratospheric rise having as recently as 2019 represented Carlisle United in League Two.

The Toffees are hoping to hold out for a fee of £75m before agreeing to part ways with Branthwaite. This of course represents significant expenditure at a time when Sir Jim Ratcliffe is penny-pinching.
But, the internal thoughts at Goodison Park suggest exactly why United see it as a good deal to make. After Branthwaite earned his first international call-up with the England squad in March, his manager Sean Dyche was asked whether it would be difficult to keep the defender’s feet on the ground now.

“There won’t be a problem with that,” Dyche responded. “He’s come in, hasn’t changed, loads of good reviews and rightly so since he came back (from PSV), lots of man of the match awards

“He’s signed a new deal, don’t forget, been with the Under 21s and been pretty steady among all that. But you do want him to change in a positive way, come out of himself more and keep thriving on it, building his own on-pitch persona.
“I had Tarky (James Tarkowski) and Keano (Michael Keane) when they were young (at Burnley), they started expressing themselves as individuals with the way they play and then as leader types.” It is clear the feeling among Everton staff is that Branthwaite is on the trajectory to reach the top of the game, which is music to the ears United fans.

Ultimately, that is the profile of signing that United wants to bring to the club in the summer. We know that Ratcliffe and INEOS prefer to bring players to the club who are younger, have resale value and will improve the team for the long-term.
Branthwaite’s performances this season suggest he could easily cope with the big occasion at Old Trafford and that is why United are prepared to spend big money on his signature.
