Mason Mount continued his return to fitness at Manchester United with a substitute appearance in their derby draw with Manchester City.

United and City played out one of the most forgettable Manchester derbies in recent memory on Sunday, drawing 0-0 at Old Trafford in a match sparse of clear-cut chances which the hosts had the better of.

Keith Hackett told Football Insider that Man United should have been awarded a first-minute penalty following Ruben Dias’ foul on Alejandro Garnacho, but fans had little other incentive to get off their seats.

Garnacho’s performance eventually deteriorated into one which led to heavy criticism from United fans, and the introduction of Mount and Joshua Zirkzee in the 71st minute couldn’t make the difference either.

Mason Mount finally back in action for Man United

Mount couldn’t steer the game in the Red Devils’ favour after coming off the bench and picked up an almost immediate yellow card for a foul on Bernardo Silva, but United fans will be glad to see him back.

It’s been a two-year period to forget for the England playmaker since his £55million move from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, with a single goal scored across 35 appearances in the last 18 months.

The 26-year-old has been limited to just 14 appearances this term and a mere eight since Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford, with persistent hamstring injuries constricting Mount to the sidelines.

After his 19-minute cameo on Sunday, Mount posted on Instagram (6 April), saying: “Plenty to take away. Big one Thursday”, as United look ahead to their Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.

United youngsters Toby Collyer and Chido Obi-Martin both left comments, while Zirkzee also left a message, calling Mount: “My guy!!!!”

Zirkzee and Mount futures may be away from Old Trafford

Mount’s impact since arriving at Old Trafford has been minimal, but it’s arguable that Zirkzee is in the same boat following his £33m transfer from Bologna last summer, particularly in Amorim’s new system.

Signed by Erik ten Hag to provide an alternative to Rasmus Hojlund up front for United, neither Zirkzee nor the Dane are the type of number nine Amorim wants, leaving a huge hole in the Red Devils’ frontline.

Even when fit and on form, Mount faces a similar obstacle as part of Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 setup, and with a squad overhaul on the cards this summer, it’s unclear if Old Trafford will be a long-term home for the duo.
