Goodbye from the blog

Newcastle claim fifth but Tottenham can claim that position back on Sunday when they travel to Manchester City.

The live blog will be back at the Etihad to bring you all the build-up and full coverage of the game.

We hope you enjoyed the match at St James’ Park – the Newcastle fans certainly did.

Plenty for Manchester United to think about before they face Chelsea on Wednesday.

For now, from the Al Jazeera team, it’s goodbye.

Newcastle were better – ten Hag

United manager Eric ten Hag admits his side were second-best at Newcastle.

“We had a tough first half and we said we were pleased to be 0-0 and stay in the game,” ten Hag told TNT Sports.

“We will talk with the team tomorrow about it and then move on.

“In the end, we stayed in the game and had some good chances by Reguilon – it was a clearance on the line – and we had a goal disallowed.

“Newcastle were better tonight though. This team is resilient and we stick together and we keep going.”

Howe hails response to PSG draw

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was delighted with the performance following the disappointment of the draw at Paris St Germain on Tuesday.

He was also full of praise for the goalscorer, Anthony Gordon.

“From day one when he came here, you could see his personality and his desire to do well,” Howe told TNT Sports.

“He was up against a really good defender in Wan-Bissaka and I’m glad he’s getting the goals he deserves.

“We rested them well. We had a good time to get them ready between PSG and this game.

“What a response to that late goal in Paris, we rolled our sleeves up and, all over the pitch, the performances were very good.”

United ‘very poor’

Former Scottish international footballer Ally McCoist told TNT Sports that ten Hag’s team didn’t turn up.

“They were very disappointing,” McCoist said. “That was a very poor performance from Manchester United.”

Howe saw more of the ball than the United attack

The Newcastle boss still has it.

It was an outstanding performance by his side – the score didn’t reflect the dominance.

Plenty of questions to be asked by United, who rarely got a touch in the Newcastle box.

Goalscorer Gordon delighted with win

Antony Gordon scored the only goal of the game and, after disappointment in Paris, was delighted to secure the win.

“That was a big win after a massive week. Some good moments – some not so much so,” he told TNT Sports.

“It’s the third match in a row that we were unchanged. It was so satisfying because we know how hard we work for each other.

“They defended really well in the first half and we had to rejig it at half time.”

Newcastle climb to fifth

Eddie Howe will be delighted with his team for hanging on under pressure from United at the end.

A third consecutive game where the injury-plagued Magpies named an unchanged side but the legs were still strong at the end.

United threw on the subs and threw bodies forward but the Newcastle defence didn’t give the away team a sniff all night.

Maguire, who was outstanding in defence, was unfortunate to end up in the way of Antony’s volley late on but that was United’s only serious effort in the game.

Newcastle had enough possession – and a few half chances – to have finished off United long before the final whistle.

The diminished numbers in the squad, however, did everything they could for the win.
