Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal in three-way battle for Brentford star Aaron Hickey

Brentford boss Thomas Frank insists the Bees will not sell Aaron Hickey, but Premier League interest in the Scotland international is growing by the week.

BRENTFORD, ENGLAND – APRIL 08: Aaron Hickey of Brentford looks dejected during the Premier League match between Brentford FC and Newcastle United at Brentford Community Stadium on April 8, 2023 in Brentford, United Kingdom.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are all set to make offers for Brentford’s Scotland international Aaron Hickey.

The 21-year-old Bees full-back has been impressive for both club and country and has attracted interest from the Premier League’s trio of big hitters as well as German giants Bayern Munich. Hickey has made impressive progress under manager Thomas Frank after being lured from Bologna, where he spent two seasons after making the bold decision to leave Hearts as a teenager.

Hickey is capable of playing on both wings and has previously won 11 caps for Scotland. His international coach Steve Clarke sees him as an integral part of a team that will almost certainly qualify for next summer’s European Championships. Frank will hate to lose Hickey, especially as it is increasingly likely that striker Ivan Toney will be sold in the January transfer window once his playing ban ends. Mirror Sport understands that Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are all interested in Toney, who is believed to cost in excess of £60million.

It’s a similar story for Hickey too: the Bees are likely to demand around £50 million before considering entering into negotiations. Hickey will play an even bigger role in the coming months after Rico Henry was ruled out of the season with a serious knee injury.

“With Aaron there is a lot of talk about whether he is a right-back or a left-back, but I am in the favored position that he can play on both sides and will most likely play on the left,” he said. “It is bipedal and has enormous abilities. We don’t have many full-backs, so he’s very important. “He’s a player we signed a year ago with big ambitions for his future, and things are going in the right direction for him.”

Earlier this year, Manchester City were linked with a move for Hickey and although Frank tipped his player for the top spot, he claimed he was not done yet. In April, he said: “We will not sell it. He hasn’t even been here a year, with all due respect. I think he’s a very good young player who I think has a fantastic future ahead of him. Hickey has become a key member of Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad

“There has to be a little extra to get into the City team in terms of performance. I think he did well and I really like him. I think he can get up there.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has made it clear how much he values versatility and Hickey’s ability to play on both flanks will likely interest him as he continues to build his squad. United, meanwhile, are in desperate need of reinforcements at full-back, with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka injured.

Liverpool have focused on an aging midfield during their summer rebuild, but as Jurgen Klopp pursues a reboot he calls ‘Liverpool 2.0’, young Hickey appears to fit the bill.
