Zinedine Zidane continues to be linked with Manchester United following the club’s underwhelming start to the new Premier League campaign.

The iconic Frenchman has been out of work for more than three years since bringing the curtain down on his second spell in charge of Real Madrid, though that seemingly hasn’t dampened the desire to see him in the Old Trafford dugout.

Fresh speculation linking him with the Red Devils has emerged in recent weeks amid the growing scrutiny on Erik ten Hag. And while doubts have been cast over Zidane working in England due to the language barrier, he himself said “never say never” back in 2022.

He discussed the prospect of managing the Premier League during an interview with L’Equipe, saying: “Never say never. Especially when you are a coach today. If I go back to a club, it is to win. I say this with all modesty.

“That’s why I can’t just go anywhere. For other reasons, too. Certain conditions make things more difficult. When someone says to me, ‘Do you want to go to Manchester [United]?’ I understand English but I don’t fully master it.

“I know there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work differently. To win, many elements come into play. It’s a global context. I know what I need to win. Of course, I might not always win, but I know that you need to have this, this and this. And I want to do everything on my side to optimise my chances of victory.”

While Zidane has been out of work for a prolonged period, speculation over a potential return to management has ramped up this year after the legendary midfielder was spotting taking in a Real Betis training session last month.

Zidane’s trip to the La Liga outfit’s training ground has only fuelled theories that he is now ready to make his return. It’s believed he was there to witness his son, Elyaz, train with the senior team.

Following on from his illustrious playing career, Zidane enjoyed tremendous success across his two spells as head coach with Real Madrid, winning La Liga twice and the Champions League three times.

He has since been heavily linked with the France national team job: a role which is believed to be his dream gig. Zidane has also been linked with other top clubs in Europe but has remained coy over his next move, though he did publicly rule out the prospect of taking over at Bayern Munich back in May.
