Man Utd will have to lose two players against Galatasaray as Erik Ten Hag risks repeating his mistake

Erik ten Hag cannot make the same mistake

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag worried about his team’s poor form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is set to make two changes for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Galatasaray at Old Trafford. Ten Hag will be without an underperforming duo as United look to bounce back from their dismal 1-0 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Man Utd manager Erik Ten Hag backs referees after Liverpool VAR controversy

The Red Devils suffered their fifth defeat of the season and their fourth in seven league matches after failing to respond to Joachim Andersen’s first-half goal in the Under-16s.

Boos – although partly directed at the referee’s performance – rang out across Old Trafford during normal time as pressure mounted on Ten Hag to deliver results.

Anything other than a win against Galatasaray would be the final blow for the Dutchman following United’s 4-3 defeat at Bayern Munich in their Champions League Group A opener. Ten Hag will surely make at least one change to the dismal side that failed to impress against Palace just days after a rotating side beat the Eagles 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

But he must remove at least two stars who have failed to impress in recent weeks and replace them with a duo who deserve more.

Harry Maguire produced his best recent performance in United’s midweek win over Palace, dominating alongside Raphael Varane.

But Ten Hag reminded him that he was fourth choice in his ranks and decided to recall Victor Lindelof for the Premier League rematch.

However, the Swedish international was below par and contributed little to ball progression with lateral passes, failed to win any of three aerial duels and lost Andersen at a set point for the winning goal.

Ten Hag was expected to follow Maguire in a move that could have boosted the former United captain’s confidence, but he had to settle for a seven-minute cameo.

Maguire should be recalled for the match against Galatasaray, regaining his place alongside Varane, with Lindelof left on the bench.

Ten Hag also has a big decision to make on offense. United fans have long been calling for Facundo Pellistri to be given his chance, but since that chance came he has struggled to make an impact.

Man Utd manager Ten Hag was right about Greenwood after club’s big move

Pellistri has started three of United’s last four games, including the loss to Bayern, but has failed to contribute a single goal or assist.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho put in an excellent performance against Palace in the Carabao Cup, enhancing the Red Devils’ performance off the bench on Saturday.

Ten Hag appears to insist that Garnacho can only or will only operate on the left, Marcus Rashford’s preferred position. But he would certainly pose a bigger threat to the right than Pellistri. Alternatively, he could use Hannibal Mejbri in his midfield and push Bruno Fernandes or Mason Mount to the right.
