Manager and teammate rave about signing of Man Utd star after successful debut

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Matej Kovar made a successful debut for Bayer Leverkusen last night.

Matej Kovar has received plaudits after impressing on his Bayer Leverkusen debut. The former Manchester United goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in the 4-0 win over Swedish club Hacken.

Kovar won the Czech title last season on loan at Sparta Prague and impressed in pre-season for Manchester United earlier this summer.

According to BBC Sport, United opted for a transfer fee and received a transfer fee of £7.7 million, which includes a buyout clause. READ: Manchester United transfers, loans, releases and youth confirmed for 2023/24

Praise of Kovar

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has explained his decision to select Kovar for his debut.

He told BILD: “I wanted to see that he could play and that he was ready. And it was important for him to be able to play again. Matej is calm, he can play well.

He added that it was unclear whether he would remain as Europa League goalkeeper and confirmed that Lukas Hradecky would return to the Bundesliga this weekend.

“There is no final decision. We had now opted for Häcken. Let’s see what happens. Lukas will be in goal on Sunday.

His teammate Jonathan Tah also spoke after the match and congratulated Kovar: “I’m happy for him that he was able to make his debut.” He played a good match, he is also making good progress in training and he should continue this momentum. .”

Manchester United let one of the best talents go

It’s no surprise that Kovar performs well at a high level. He looked a class performer in pre-season and it’s fair to assume that Manchester United would be no worse off if he was number one this season. What angers United fans is the low transfer fee he was allowed to leave for. £7.7 million is a very low transfer fee in the modern game and Kovar is an exceptional candidate.

Seeing City sell James Trafford to Burnley for £19 million, it certainly seems like United should have gotten more for Kovar, especially if he continues to impress at Leverkusen.
