The last time Liverpool visited Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag secured his first victory as Manchester United manager.

On Sunday, Ten Hag might need another to strengthen his chances of keeping his job. The FA Cup represents United’s last remaining hope of a trophy this season, meaning their quarter-final showdown with the Merseysiders ranks as one of the biggest games of his tenure thus far.

Currently eight points shy of the top four, United’s only hope of salvaging something from this campaign will be by winning the FA Cup. But to do so they will have to get the better of a Liverpool side that has already scooped one trophy this term and are in contention to win another three.

Despite all of their injury problems, Jurgen Klopp has managed to get a consistent tune out of his players and they were unfortunate not to beat Manchester City at the weekend. If the Reds are to get the better of their fiercest rival and book a third Wembley trip of the Ten Hag era, they will almost certainly need the magic of Alejandro Garnacho. The young Argentine was excellent against Everton at the weekend, winning two penalties to help United secure a 2-0 win.

For the second Garnacho drove at the Everton backline, made his way across the width of the penalty area and was eventually halted by Ben Godfrey. His desire and determination to make something happen helped secure the points. In terms of creativity and flair, Garnacho is United’s most expansive and exciting player. He brings the wow factor to the table that gets bums off seats and entertains.

Though it remains to be seen what will be determined as his long-term position, he has been much better on the right in recent weeks. He has been far more creative and threatening from that flank, though he did win the first penalty against Everton as a result of venturing into the left channel.
