Manchester United are reportedly exploring a reunion between Rúben Amorim and his former Sporting CP midfield captain Morten Hjulmand.
Amorim, who brought Hjulmand to Sporting in 2023 and later named him captain in 2024, is said to value him highly for his role as a deep‑lying playmaker in his tactical setup .
United are actively seeking midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2025–26 season following departures and underwhelming performances in the engine room. With Christian Eriksen gone and Casemiro struggling to adapt, Amorim is targeting a player he already trusts—Hjulmand .
Sporting’s valuation remains steep: Hjulmand’s release clause stands at around €80 million, and United are reportedly looking to negotiate down to €50 million. Sporting have so far refused offers below that figure . United’s initial offer of approximately €40 million (or £35 million) was rejected, with Sporting holding firm and reportedly aiming for closer to €50 million—or even insisting on the full clause for serious suitors like Manchester City and Juventus .
On the other hand, Hjulmand’s representatives are believed to be pushing for a transfer at around €30–40 million—implying possible friction between player, club, and suitors over his fair value .
In summary:
United view Hjulmand as an ideal midfield profile tailored to Amorim’s system.
Sporting are yet to budge significantly on valuation; a deal remains difficult but not impossible if expectations are aligned.
Hjulmand himself is reportedly enthusiastic about reuniting with his former coach at Old Trafford .
At this stage, the reunion is very much on the radar but hinges on negotiation over the price tag and Sporting’s willingness to compromise on the re
lease clause.
