Manchester United are reportedly preparing a substantial bid, around £61 million (€70 million), to sign Fermín López this summer.
The 22‑year‑old midfielder has emerged as a key target under new manager Ruben Amorim, who sees López as an ideal fit for his 3‑4‑3 system at Old Trafford .
United first approached Barcelona during the January transfer window—offering around £58 million (€70 million)—but the deal did not proceed. At the time, López signalled his desire to remain at Camp Nou, and Barcelona rejected United’s approach amid reluctance to sell mid‑season .
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick reportedly opposed a sale in January, deeming López integral to the squad. However, by March and April 2025, the club was described as open to negotiations, especially since options like Pedri and Gavi occupy similar positions, and López was still not guaranteed consistent starts .
In recent days, United’s interest has intensified, with both English and international reports confirming they are “ready to launch” the £61 million bid while also offering to nearly double López’s wages in their pitch to the player .
López—who signed a new contract with Barcelona running until 2029, with a huge release clause reported at €500 million—has publicly expressed his commitment to Barça. He has previously said he wants to stay for “many years,” though recent comments suggest he had been unaware of transfer interest until informed by his club .
Barcelona’s financial constraints could make a sale pragmatic—but it would cut ties with a homegrown La Masia talent. For Manchester United, the young Spaniard offers energy, creativity and goals from midfield—traits they believe can boost a squad in need of attacking thrust
