Matthijs de Ligt is edging closer to a high-profile transfer to Manchester United after Bayern Munich accepted an offer worth up to £41million for his signature.

 

 

 

 

 

The 24-year-old verbally agreed personal terms with United last month. However, owing to an initial difference in valuation, his proposed move to Old Trafford stalled.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A breakthrough was eventually reached, though, as United prepare to spread the cost over three years. De Ligt is well-known to manager Erik ten Hag from their Ajax days and he is expected to be joined at the club by Bayern teammate Noussair Mazraoui.

Mazraoui is set to cost around £17million as United revamp their defensive options. Leny Yoro has already arrived from Lille and Ineos were ‘open’ to signing up to three centre-backs this summer.

 

 

 

De Ligt will make that number two amid ongoing interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. However, with the spend moving beyond £150million, further buys will almost certainly be governed by player sales.

 

 

 

United are working on a deal to sell Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham this summer, while they are actively looking to move Victor Lindelof on, too. Casemiro, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho could also depart.
