Manchester United hints at Lesandro Martinez return as Yoro is out injured

Manchester United want to sign a new midfielder this summer but need to raise funds and clear space by selling one of Erik ten Hag’s current options, according to reports. The Red Devils are eyeing a new midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte is thought to be at the top of the shortlist.

INEOS have already sanctioned one midfield exit, selling Donny van de Beek to Girona in a deal worth up to £4million.

Casemiro was expected to be a big-money departure amid strong interest from Saudi Arabia, but he is now considered increasingly likely to remain at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay currently represents the most probable midfield sale, with Fulham reportedly preparing to improve an offer for his signature.

Galatasaray are among the overseas clubs circling the 27-year-old, an important impact player for Ten Hag, who United are said to value at £40m.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen faces an uncertain future after he was given a reduced role last season, with little hope of increased game time this term. He is reportedly available for just £4m.

Express Sport looks at Ten Hag’s dream midfield if United boost their budget with McTominay and Eriksen’s exits.

Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo will be one of the first names on the United team sheet this season after an incredible breakout 2023/24 campaign and his involvement for England at Euro 2024.

INEOS must build their project around the 19-year-old, who looks set to partner another midfielder in a double pivot, with Ten Hag switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation in pre-season.

Casemiro is currently the most likely candidate, but his dismal 2022/23 campaign has left many doubting whether he is a viable option.

McTominay’s departure would pave the way for fresh blood to enter the engine room. And speaking of…

Manuel Ugarte

It’s been no secret that United have identified Ugarte as their priority midfield target should they get the chance to pursue a new arrival.

Sofyan Amrabat, who spent last season on loan at Old Trafford, is also thought to be an option after finishing strongly.

But Ugarte has reportedly already agreed personal terms with United, and PSG’s sale stance is expected to soften once they complete a deal for Benfica’s Joao Neves.

The 23-year-old would provide a level of tenacity and ball-winning ability that could complement Mainoo perfectly behind United’s captain.

Bruno Fernandes

That is, of course, Bruno Fernandes, who, barring a major transfer twist, will still be at the club at the start of the season.

The 29-year-old had been linked with a potential exit after United failed to qualify for the Champions League, but that prospect hasn’t progressed in recent weeks.

A switch back to a 4-2-3-1 formation will hugely benefit Fernandes, who was forced to drop into deep positions to receive the ball and make things happen last term.

United will hope his deputy, Mason Mount, can enjoy a much better campaign after his injury-

.stricken start to life at the club, too.
