Manchester United could reconsider Alvaro Fernandez loan after Luke Shaw injury

Manchester United may be forced to abandon plans to send Alvaro Fernandez on loan this summer after news that Luke Shaw has suffered a muscle injury.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed Shaw will be sidelined for a spell

United are still assessing the nature of the injury and are hoping the Englishman will be out for weeks rather than months.

Shaw joins fellow left-back Tyrell Malacia on the couch. The Dutch international also picked up an injury just before the Red Devils traveled to the United States for their pre-season tour.

With Brandon Williams now at Ipswich Town, Fernandez is the only real left-back available for selection ahead of Erik ten Hag. Diogo Dalot is versatile and played there last season, even wearing that cap for Milan during his loan spell, but the young Spaniard fits in more naturally.

The Spaniard has obviously attracted interest from a number of clubs interested in his services, but United may now have to retain him due to a lack of options at left-back. It is understood that the 20-times English champion is not interested in signing the sale of Fernandez in this window.

An earlier report from The Peoples Person suggested the Old Trafford side were open to a permanent departure for the defender, but that now appears to have changed, especially with Shaw out.

It’s no secret United need to sell before they buy, and Fernandez’s departure would have given Ten Hag’s side slightly more money to spend on desired revenues.

Granada are believed to be in talks with the 20-time English champion over the 20-year-old.

The Spanish side want a purchase option to be included in every negotiation. Premier League rivals Burnley are also admirers of Fernandez and Vincent Kompany would like to include him in his Turf Moor project if a deal can be reached with United.

Amidst all this, TEAMtalk explain that Fernandez still has a future at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old Spaniard is also a left-back and Granada are hoping to include a buy-out option in the deal.

However, United believed Fernandez could later become a key first-team player and would only aim for a loan deal.”

TEAMtalk also mentions that David Moyes’ Hammers want the left-back.

During United’s pre-season tour, the 20-year-old impressed when he was given the chance by Ten Hag. Last league season saw him enjoy a successful spell at Preston North End, where he registered an impressive six assists in 42 appearances.

If his job is indeed to fill the void left by Shaw and Malacia, Fernandez must step up, rise to the challenge and prove his worth.
