Pep Guardiola believes Manchester United’s four new signings will provide momentum and help Erik ten Hag to steer his side into the Premier League top four this season.
United have signed Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer and are looking to sign a midfielder before the transfer deadline on August 30. Mazraoui made his full debut in the 1-0 victory against Fulham on Friday and Zirkzee scored the matchwinner from off the bench.
De Ligt was also introduced to the game as a substitute and those new arrivals all played their part in claiming three points on the opening day of the season. Yoro was unveiled to the Old Trafford crowd before the game and he stood on crutches following a successful surgery on the metatarsal injury that he sustained in pre-season.

The young defender, who was signed from Lille for an initial €62m, is expected to return to action in October and will attempt to help United qualify for Champions League football again. That is the minimum target for Ten Hag and Guardiola recently told reporters he expects United to be in contention for top four and to have ‘momentum’ after their summer transfers.
“Always at the beginning of the season, the first target is to finish in the top four,” Guardiola said about the tough competition in the Premier League this season. “People say: ‘Oh, come on’, I say ‘no’. Newcastle are not in Europe, and are going to play one game a week. Newcastle with one game a week this season will be the Newcastle of two seasons ago.

“Arsenal are not necessary to talk about. Liverpool are not necessary to talk about. I know the signings of United, they are going to take the momentum and they will be there.
“Tottenham, I’m pretty sure they invest and with the young players and the manager knows better. There are a lot of teams – Chelsea again, the amount of players and their quality and the manager.
“Six or seven teams will be there and if you drop a little bit, you will be away. This is the reality that I have felt since the first season I arrived here and after we proved to ourselves that we can do it and to try to do it again. It’s simple.”
United finished eighth in the Premier League last term, which represented their worst finish in the top flight, and were eight points adrift from the Champions League places. The bookmakers have made City, Arsenal, Liverpool and United their favourites to finish in the top four, with Chelsea and Tottenham priced as the most likely after that.
Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League last season but many expect Unai Emery’s side to drop off, just like Newcastle did after playing in Europe’s premium competition.
