Manchester United’s long-running takeover saga is likely to continue to frustrate the club’s disgruntled supporters.

Man Utd got their season back on track with Burnley victory | Football summary

The Glazer family continues to consider proposals from Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to buy Manchester United, with the latter apparently ready to make a new offer. Little significant progress has been made since the Red Devils’ majority owners confirmed almost 12 months ago that they were seeking further investment in the club, which could include an outright sale.

‘Ratcliffe prepares new takeover bid for Man Utd’ in attempt to break impasse with Glazers

Old Trafford officials have been in talks with the two main buyers for months, with Qatar-based Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani seeking to take full control, while British billionaire Ratcliffe favors a majority stake.

The petrochemicals magnate and INEOS CEO had initially bid for a 69% stake in United, but only for shares held by the Glazer family. This is said to have raised alarm bells among the club’s minority shareholders, who fear a conflict of interest when it comes to directors’ advice on a preferred bidder.

According to Bloomberg, Ratcliffe is now working to adjust his offer to directly address these concerns and may return with a new offer.

Neither Ratcliffe nor Sheikh Jassim met the Glazers’ asking price of £6 billion, but brothers Joel and Avram are believed to be reluctant to cut all ties with Old Trafford after 18 years of ownership of the club.

In theory, this could give the INEOS boss an advantage in negotiations, as his deal alone will allow the Glazers to remain involved with United, albeit in a limited capacity. But this ambition is not shared by many of the club’s core supporters, who blame American businessmen for saddling Manchester with debt and contributing to relatively poor performances on the pitch for several years.

Nonetheless, the Bloomberg report claims that sources close to the negotiations, who wished to remain anonymous, insist that “both proposals are still under consideration by the club, as is a possible sale of a minority stake.”

If Ratcliffe’s offer seems complex, Sheikh Jassim’s is much simpler. The Qatari banker wants to acquire all the shares in the club and, with the support of his group of investors, promises significant investments for the players and new infrastructure.

United are currently eighth in the Premier League and have lost three of their opening six games. They play Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup tonight.
